I don't think mines working....put oil in....level increases on dipstick but not on gauge??
Before anyone asks I think I am fully conversant with oil filling procedures -engine temp, level ground etc etc!
Anyone come across this?
(Presume 993 is same as 964)

I assume 993 is the same as 964, therefore I expect the oil level sender in the oil tank to be kaput. Quite a simple diy job, there is a write up on John Mile's site. Mine was very irratict, obviously some bad spots on the resistor track.

I think kaput oil sender indicates full - not empty. Impressed that you can get any sensible reading from the dipstick!!!
Are you getting the engine hot enough?? I know that I never get a reading on the gauge until oil temp is approaching '9 o'clock'.

Thanks guys.
Wondering if mine is actually using a lot of oil and is right down on gauge and I am misreading it on dipstick?
When I bought car 3,000 miles ago leakdown result was 'less than 5% on all cylinders'. Does this imply oil consumption should be low?
Slight tangent here, but oil consumption, as opposed to leaking, is via it passing into cylinder and being burnt?

You have definitely been spending too much time on the 993 board!

Piers,
Leaking heads (or leaky engine in general for that matter, could be oil pipes etc) would not be shown by a leakdown test. An engine could be leaking oil but still be perfectly strong. My 964, when I sold it, was just like that.
If the engine leaks from the heads the only fix is a rebuild££. All air cooled 911 engines are prone to leaking and apparently it can develop over a short period of time.
Personally, I think you're just not reading it correcttly

well 9 o'clock should be hot enough. I would suggest adding more oil until the gauge shows movement, but an overfill is a PITA. Sorry I can't offer any other help.
