Default SMOKIN' (how a speedometer dies)

Well start up the 964 to bring to my house so I can wash it. Haven't driven in a month. Car stars right up like normal and I see smoke (a very small amount like a match blown out) coming from the speedometer. ****!!!! Stop car turn off. Stinks like burnt circuit boards. Open hood make sure it's not in the climate box area. Drive it home a 1/4 mile and it's not smoking but smells like hell. Pull speedometer. Yup. It stinks bad. No visible burned things. Drive car no speedo and no more stink

I'm not going to open it since north Hollywood speedometer is 30 mins away. Just going to take it there. Did a few google searches seems there is a resistor that is easy to replace that will smoke. Hope it's just that.

And since my miles are a bit jumpy in motion (it works fine) I'll have them replace the drive gears.

Damn old cars!!!

Keep us posted and thanks for the reminder. I need to take my speedo to them to get the odometer/trip fixed.

Speaking of trip gear, that's one thing I don't think they tell you on delivery, don't press reset while car in motion

Look, car almost worthless. Speedo worked fine actually before pulled just smells. Nothing Visible. Pretty sure it's just an old fried circuits cap or resistor. Opening this is a pain so I'm paying to have it done right. I know my limits.

I'll be interested to see how long it takes. I plan on having my gauges redone this winter and I'm trying to gauge (get it?) what a realistic timeline is

My only problem with North Hollywood Speedometer was that they fixed my odometer in April 2011 and less than 7000mi later, in September 2014, the damn thing stopped ticking over again and I was out $142, again, for the 2nd repair.

Yea, it does, lol. They were super fast on the turnaround both times. I would use them again, just hoping I don't have to cause that would be ridiculous.

Well, dropped off the Speedo at Hollywood Speedometer. Fking LA traffic today though. I was an idiot to do this on a friday :-)

Good news is they know exactly what the issue is. Will open it up, clean it, fix, and also replace the odometer gears (mine are a little 'jittery' in movement) and will pick it up early next week. Supposedly a capacitor shorts and takes the resistor with it. I could have probably done this myself but I'll let the pros do it.

Super nice guys. Nice to have so many great shops close by!!!

Cool. Now just don't wait a month to drive it again. They get testy when not adored.

Ugh, i'm suffering from TMCS* and not enough time at the moment. 89 was getting attention, she's parked, RS prep for next track day now she's parked... so 964 gets in rotation... took that to pelican yesterday and did a little cruise later, swapped some brake pads, cleaned up the fender/underside a bit, wheels off clean, waxed, softened shocks a bit, such a fun car. Need to finish my build!

oh, I know this has been documented, but here is:
With the speedometer removed the wing light will stay lit on the clock. Can still move it up and down manually. pulling plug from wing module eliminates light (and wing will not go up and down obviously).

LOL @ TMCS, not a bad problem to have. Good to hear North Hollywood knew exactly what the culprit was.

Went to first CC as spectator ... Probably saw your car. Is it CC edict that Owner's stay away from their cars I did not meet or talk to a single Owner of any car on the lot? What, do they all hide off in the woods? I wanted to drive the black bat mobile

Picked up speedo on Monday. Traffic not bad at all... did the socal loop. North Hollywood to Lake forest to pickup some tires from a buddy for the RS. Lets see 84 at the beach where i'm at, 98 in NoHo, 104 in Lake Forest... ouch.

Anyway, speedo looks great, has 1 more mile on it, do I need to check the "not actual mileage" box now at the DMV? :-) Still has a bit of a stink to it but works perfect.

Hot tip: thanks to a Pelican who showed me this stuff for use on rubber. Installing the dials / gaskets can be a little finicky as the rubber binds up. Use some of this. Just a little on your finger and VERY lightly rub it into the gasket. You can use this stuff on rubber everything. Like when installing hoses, seals, orings, etc.

Well, i was walking around and chatting with a few buddies that showed up. I don't do CC too often, so not sure what the official protocol is. But you tend to have those that get a chair and sit by their ride and those that walk around to checkout the others.
