RS America prices and desirability

Here is another supposedly low mileage RSA. No mention of the Big red update roll cage and front ducts or any history. I have no doubt if this is a 24k mile car every mile was as a track car. I love the comment "captures the spirit of" the 73 RS. In what way? I find very few that have accurate odo readings and have not been extensively tracked. Yet there seem to be many that are trying to pass them off as street driven cars.

Love these threads. Esp all the negative comments. Almost makes me want to visit the 991 GT3 forum where everybody blows sunshine up each others ***. Haha

That High Marques red car looks good in person. Not sure about the asking.

No, the 991 GT3 board is perfect if you like to discuss deviated color schemes, nano coatings, and "how come porsche won't let me buy an RS" threads.

Weren't the 964s subject to a head gasket issue that led to a lot of early top end work on them?

Just calling a spade a spade. Cool car, not worth the asking on these. They WERE worth every penny when they were closer to the C2 values. But not a 2x differential... At 100k I'm buying a 996 or 997 GT3!

Re 991 GT3 board, did you see the thread on "Deviated stitching on dash matches stitching on wife's tampon"?

Got it. Thanks. I don't know the subtle nuances of the 964 engine issues other than that the HG issue and the dizzy overheating issues exist. What years and variants they cover is outside my knowledge.

A well treated later model 964 should last a long time without any top end work. The biggest concern are the valve guides which can wear prematurely which is a problem for the 3.6L engines in general. My 93 C2 has 61k miles. It was extensively tracked and it still runs like new. No oil leaks or oil related smoke.
A lot of how these cars hold up is how the original owner treats them. Proper break in and allowing the car to warm up before pushing it can make a huge difference. At 42k miles I had Dan Jacobs do a leakdown and compression and the numbers were perfect with 1-2% in all cylinders. Numbers haven't changed much despite the additional mileage and hard use.

In approximately 2004-5 I purchased a one owner 110k miles black RSA from Hawaii for $19k. It was probably $6-7k under market at the time. Cost me $2,100 to get it to the east coast. Drove it 2-3 years and sold it to a fellow from Australia. Talk about a car going "full circle;" Germany-Hawaii-NY-Australia.

I sold my 42k mile RSA in 2001 for $36k LOL.
There used to be a really long running thread here about whether or not an RSA was worth buying for $35k or so vs. buying a regular C2 coupe for $25k. IIRC there were dozens of pages and the debate rambled on and on.
I find the prices for RSA's almost laughable these days.
This dealer has been listing this one for over a year:

Its missing the correct seats and the rear package tray along with some trim items. I would bet it was modded for the track and the owner then sold off those items. Based on what I have learned in talking to that dealer on several cars I wouldn't buy anything from them.

I bet you 90% of all RSA's fall into this category. It is another one of those cars that needs to be stock original to warrant the extreme asking prices. The rest are significantly overpriced.
I know of a couple sub 20k mile examples that are 100% original condition but the owners have no interest in selling.
BTW here is a picture of the red car and mine at Pocono back in 2005. The RSA was in like new condition at the time.
FYI this is not the picture used in Pano.

There are so many new Porsche enthusiasts in today's market. Let them buy tracked RSA for $100k.
A super low mile original RSA is worth to collect. Everything else is just a c2 with some deletes that deserves to be driven and modded to perfection.

Original 20k miles still has the engine tray in place...
It's all a matter of perspective, I've have/had four of these and I do think they are the culmination of the classic aircooled 911. However I wouldn't shell out 100k for one. I was trying to find a nice C2 coupe for a driver, for the money still a reach for a clean unmolested one. Just bought a Cayman S instead....
