Default Trading 993 for a 965

ooking for some input

My brother has a 92 965 blk/blk that he doesn't drive much, and he really likes likes my 993 Cab blk/blk/tan very clean, here's the catch, his 965 has 93 964 3.6 NA motor, he had bought the 965 with out a motor and trans, the chassis has 49k on it and its good shape as far as the body goes, I was thinking of turning it into a 3.8 RSR, whats your thoughts

It's been awhile sense my last post, but that's what happens when you drive a 993 NA car nothing to report,

I have a update on the 965 trade, I just got back from a test drive in AZ, AC works..
thank god..

Its a true 1992 964 Turbo one of 289 built that year, Blk on Blk full leather interior and trim, two owner car with 49000 miles,

Starts and drives great and that 3.6 NA engine feels peppy the engine sound different than the 993, I'm sure the hydraulic lifters have something to do with it, it feels like it may need to be corner balanced, my brother installed H &R lowering springs, it feels off.

The 3.6 Na motor has one exhaust outlet on the right, and the 965 has dual outlet bumper, looks bad, so i will need a dual out muffler for a 964 .

Here's whats wrong with the car, It Leaks power steering fluid from somewhere around the reservoir, should be a easy fix, rear lighting need to be replaced , they look pink, the read deck is warped, because of the AZ heat and it's leather

The brakes on the 965 use a electric hydraulic pump system, the brakes need to be bleed correctly, it's a process,

The gear lever has a weird thing going on , a first the gear lever acted normal, as drove the can for a while the gear started to get sticky, like the linkage is rubbing or catching on something, maybe the tranny mounts are going bad, or the tunnel cover is pushed up onto it,

The tires are shot and dried up, the wheels are ok, but a set 18 RH's would look better, but for now they will stay, the front bumper and hood is pitted really bad , like he drove behind a gravel truck for a hour the rest of the paint looks great, and there's a door ding on the driver door,

over all not a bad car.

So looks like I have something to work on this spring, I will post pic's when she arrives.

thank you guys for your encouragement on doing the trade.

I would trade :-D ...but that's me. I just love 965s. It's a shame the turbo motor isn't there, and if you were to put a turbo 3.3l back in, it wouldn't be matching numbers either. I still would rather convert the car back to turbo spec over 3.8 RSR

If straight up trade, the deal is heavily in your favor. Make it a mission to track down the original drivetrain.

Based strictly on value, your friend is the beneficiary of this deal since the 965 is missing THE key part that makes it unique and thus desirable. If the 965 transmission is gone, thats an even bigger hit due to the rarity of that part.

Unless you know where the original powertrain is and can acquire that, its something I would not do.

Trade it and put a turbo motor and transmission back into it.

I love the widebody and let's face it 965>993 , but I agree with Steve that you're not getting the best end of the deal.

Don't let the 964/965 craze go to your head. You could keep your 993 and shop around for a nice clean low millage 964. The 965 looks tough, however, I really like your all original condition 993. I would really think this over. Good luck!

I wouldn't do it. The turbo is missing too much. I'd keep the 993 and look for a nice 964.

After first look I initially thought this might not be a bad deal. After all a widebody 964 is pretty valuable but the fact that its a Frankenstein car it scares me. It looks great but its got a lot of red flags and on a value basis its probably not a good deal.

i love the 965, one of the most beautiful 911's of all time. coincidentally, i watched bad boys tonight, and really only watch it because of the car scenes. BUT, a turbo without the turbo, not a chance; although not quite the same, i wouldn't accept a 993 with a 3.2 engine. i'm with steve and others, unless you can source the original powertrain or an equivalent, not a deal i'd make. but to each his/her own.
