I filmed a series a few years ago with Robbie Coltrane, called 'Coltranes, Planes & Automobiles' for Channel 4. Apart from racing around the Nurburgring in 4 supercharged SSK's, we filmed inside the biggest diesel, being made in Trieste. These are AMAZING engines, but would seriously upset the weight distribution of the Porsche!!!

Consider a modern high by-pass commercial jet engine:
Approxiamtely 100,000 shaft hp (it's actually more)
Weight ~18,000 lbs
Not a bad power to weight ratio.

How do you convert thrust to shaft horsepower?
Is that the power required to drive the fan?

Yes - the hp required to drive the fan.
Take off the fan, add a couple of booster (low pressure compressor) stages and hook it up to your favorite gearbox. That's how they use them in ships etc. Quite elegant, if you can live with the noise...they scream and excite every bloody frequency known to man (blade passing frequencies of all the different stages).

Alternative just get a 964 turbo.
Turbo winding up as you go over 3000 revs to the red line is the reminder of a Plane just as it turns on the thrust for takeoff.
Brings a smile to the face of driver every time, fear the passengers!!!
