Interesting that RUF will only do the delete with the integral roll bar and not without. I would consider doing the bar at the same time since you have to strip the car. Never hurts to add safety and the overall improved rigidity is worth it.

Alois Ruf is quite knowledgeable about this subject and I spoke with him many years ago about this.

We did this on our old 935 race car back in my IMSA days, however that had a full cage in the car so chassis stiffness was not compromised in any way.

BTW, the A-pillar fairings were worth 4-6 MPH at Daytona so they are worthwhile.

The crimped fold is actually more rigid than butt-welding the three pieces together. In most cases, a roll cage is installed to replace the lost stiffness in the roof section.
I'm with Steve on this, crimped fold trumps butt-weld any day If there was any give in the crimped stuff we'd all have cracks in the paint around the gutters which I have never ever seen.

I'd bet there are some hard driven gutter delete cars with no cage that show some 'movement' compared to non delete cars.

It's a beautiful piece of kit too.

That is supper nice. If I find another tub to build a street RS I plan to do the same. I used to know the local RUF distributer/builder Gary Borman from Exclusive in Montclair. I know his take was it was an expensive waste for a street car. My friend owns the first RUF car he built (had rain gutters) along with the 1980 IMSA winning K3 935 he took care of. Most of the cars he built AFAIK did not have the shaved gutters. I personally like the gutters. I found it strange when the Audi 5000 came out and I saw my first car without them. I guess it is all about what you grew up with.

I would agree with the comments about not doing it without a front cage, not worth the risk to me

Don't think you would notice any loss of chassis stiffness while driving but you might if you land on your roof.

My filing too,

I waned to do the sun roof delete so it's at the same time or never, hate doing things twice ...

Thinking fitting a rear roll bar , but it means no access to any one at the back ...love the fact that someone can join for short drive at the back.

Aesthetically I love the de-guttered look, if it has a slight aero advantage or reduces wind noise then that's an added bonus.

959's were also de-guttered, I don't know too much about them but were they strengthened or did they have integral cages?

Maybe weld a plate inside the roof all the way to where the gutter was ...

You can't compare a 959 to a 964 completely different in so many ways but as you can see the 959 has a substantially thicker A piler and was reinforced throughout. I believe this picture of a 959 interior disassembled will show the extra 1" plus of A piler that the 964 or 993 does not have.

I wish my 997 had rain gutters.

I hate not being able to open a window with the car wet without the door panel getting drenched.

Easy solution - drive the 993 when it rains

The 959 roof is composite so you can't make the comparison. http://forums.pelicanparts.com/porsc...-959-a-14.html
