ABS Control Unit again..
No worries - not everyone has dealt with the issues that can plague old connectors.
The ABS connector has 55 pins on both the unit and the mating harness. After 20 years, all of them deserve a good examination. The principle concern would be corrosion that prevents a solid contact. Anything other than a shiny tin color would suggest a need for cleaning with a plastic safe solvent like rubbing alcohol (all done with the car switched off). Next, all the female contacts should looks similar and all fingers pretty well closed once separated from the ABS controller, any debris in the sockets could hold the contacts open and prevent a good connection.
The connector pins are arranged in three rows -
Pins 1-19 are the long row, with pin 1 at the "handle" end, and pin 19 at the "key" end of the connector.
Pins 20-37 are the middle row, pin 20 is next to pin 1, pin 37 is next to pin 19.
Pins 38-55 are the last row, pin 38 is next to pin 20, pin 55 is next to pin 37.
Maybe the other unit you tried just made a better connection with the harness. However, there are also plenty of pictures and stories of single pins on the controller connector being badly corroded due to water ingress.
Good luck.

@964TT - I just read the thread on your 964TT build - wow, what an odyssey ! It sounds amazing tho.
@cajonfan - Which is pin number 32 ? And should i be looking on the unit, in the unit, or on the connector plug ? Is there anything in particular I should be looking for ? I apologise for the basic questions, but car electricals are not my strongest point.
@ras62 - thanks very much for locating that thread. Much appreciated - I will check it out.
