Looking to purchase 964
Hi,
I have been looking for a 964/993 for over a year now. Been checking the forums, ebay, craigslist etc. Wanted to try just posting to see if any members know of one for sale. Preferably black but any color would work and manual transmission.
Almost pulled the trigger Saturday, only to have the seller pull out because he wasn't motivated or had to sell the car. Basically, he didn't want to hunt down the records from the friend he bought from or take it to the shop i wanted for PPI.
Any leads would be appreciated.

My range is around 42K. I have done 2 PPIs on cars that were priced in my range only to be overpriced once PPI was done. Both ships advised me not necessarily say don't buy but advised me that the cars they inspected may need a lot of work in the near future. I missed out on a nice 993 because I didn't pull the trigger fast enough as I was trying to price shipping from the east coast. The others I did find in the same range ended up needing tons of work for the same price.
I would give this one a look if I was looking in that price range.

The is, unfortunately, is part of the madness with the air cooled market. I, too, had lost out on a couple cars because I was getting my ducks in a row (PPI, trying to arrange visual inspections, shipping and other costs locked down) only to have others swoop in and buy sight unseen and no PPI. Frustrating! I eventually pulled the trigger on my 993 without seeing the car in person - something I promised myself I would never do. Even with this purchase i had to deal with others making offers to the seller while I had the car in for the PPI! It was crazy! I had planned to drive up and see it (6 hours away and needed to wait for weekend) but I would have lost it if I waited. Anyway, I spent extra on the PPI and spent a lot of time on the phone and reviewing photos in order for me to buy the car without seeing or driving it. Not that this is the recommended approach, but it may be necessary in this market.
I missed an amazing 964 that I still kick myself everyday.

Doesn't mean spyerx wrong. Not all $50k cars are quality. But most $42k cars are not. And also with the ppi, talk to the shop. Ask them what they check in the ppi, and then also have your own list of items you want them to look for. A car of this age, no matter how nice will have something wrong with it - even if it's minor if the PPI s through enough. If a shop says a car needs nothing, then there had better be a pile of receipts that come with the car from recent maintenance.
There are deals out there. But by the time they make it to rennlist, the smoking deals are snapped up. I personally got to the point I wasn't sure the investment of my time was worth the deal I was looking for. You need to hit the right sites daily to find the right car.

And honestly - don't be afraid to make offers. Worst that can happen is they say no. I made an offer that I figured was going to get me hung up on - but it was accepted. Good luck!

Yes PPI is important to verify, for me personally, clean/maintained is key. Clean perfect paint, I expect and am OK with some patina on a 25yr old car, but I want one not abused and without major warts to deal with. I'm not super concerned about repairs if done properly and/or cannot tell. I don't mind spending several K to get things where I want them, but unless the car is a bargain I don't want to have to do a repaint immediately or a tranny/engine job.
This is all for C2 964:
40k - probably needs quite a few things, drippy engine, interior could be a bit ratty, same with paint, and high miles
50k - most likely recent major work, clean engine, clean interior, serviceable paint, miles 100k+
60k - no major work needed, engine clean/no drips, clean interior, good paint (maybe not all original), miles under 100k
70k+ - low miles, need nothing, very clean repaint and/or original paint, very clean interior, later year 92-94, desirable color combo/special exterior colors.
I've seen cars trade in ALL these ranges the last couple months.
At least that is what I saw/see out there.

My advice is a bit different. Work your network with the Porsche family. Post a WTB ad in all the forums. Meet everyone at all the local shops and tell them what you are looking for. I searched for my car as I would search for a job. Meet anyone and everyone. Place ads in the local PCA newsletter, meet the local PCA members. You have to get out there and find your car.
Waiting for the car to show up on RL or PP means you are competing with all the rest of the world and unless the car is right around the corner from you, you will not get there first and most likely will have to assume the risk of no PPI.
Ultimately, my efforts paid off in just 2-3 months, and I was blessed by the previous owner contacting me. The car was not really "for sale". He saw one of my ads, it resonated with him and he reached out to me. Turns out he is the long-time friend of a local Porsche enthusiast that I am fortunate to count as a friend of mine. I now have gained yet another friend and a very nice car. There was no timing pressure, no competition, just two gentlemen meeting and executing a smooth transaction. Like in the old days...
Honestly, I don't know how people buy these cars any other way. I don't know why anyone would want to cheat themselves of all the great experience that results from the process I describe.
Just my humble opinion.
