Hello peeps I read some where that our cars if stored over long period or even over winter can result in a sticky bendix gear on the starter motor?
I was told to pull the DME and once a week or every two weeks try to turn over the car around 5 times to give the starter a work out and this will not cause me to suffer a sticky bendix gear situation ?
was I fed a load of BS?
I am putting it out to you folks to see how many do this or will decide doing this ?
can their be any downsides to doing this like cause issues to the engine?
I bought mine when it hadn't been touched in 7 years... Started first crank.
I worked on another 993 that had sat for 3 years, that starter is still running strong 30k miles later.
I call bull**** on that one.
+1 - it's BS. Our starter motors are not a "Bendix" drive as such - they were inertia-driven. Ours are pre-engaged by solenoid action. Any problems will, in the main, be either earthing or solenoid based. If you hear it click when the power goes on, it works!
Having the starter refurbished (or doing it yourself as it's not exactly witchcraft), does prevent those kinds of issues. If it's properly greased an the connections are not corroded it will survive the winter.
