I just bought a 1990 C4 back from my father who I sold it to in 2004. The car has been driven very little in the past few years and has 61,000 miles. The other day the engine started to cut out as I pulled up to a stop sign. It did die and I was able to start it. This morning I went to start the car and it would not start. It turned over but absolutely nothing. I pushed the car out of the garage to see if I could start it by popping the clutch in 2nd gear. Finally after about the 6th try (it's a long hill), it started. Drove it back to my garage and shut it off. It started when I tried again. Any ideas what is going on or where I should start the trouble shooting?
Did you get the battery tested to see if you need a new one? I recently had a similar issue. Ran a few tests on my own, but ultimately went out and bought a new battery and all was good (most battery stores will run a battery test for free). My fear was a bad alternator. A test I came across which tells you if you need a new alternator is to unplug the positive terminal on the battery while the car is running --- If the car immediately turns off, you have a bad alternator, otherwise it's something else.
jeanhules, thanks for you reply. I probably wasn't clear. The battery isn't dead. It cranks just fine. Just won't start. Doesn't sound like there is any spark at all. Maybe fuel filter? Strange that I did get it started by roll starting it but it took six times.
just a thought to check if you have fuel pressure at the rails. I had a similar stalling episode that turned into a no crank issue. Turned out I had a split in the fuel line that runs from the back of the fuel filter all the way to the front of the car.
