hairline crack at the base of the cooling fan
is this dangerous, i am sure it is not good, but am wondering how not good it is, this is actually a picture of a fan from another 964 offered to me to replace my fan, since it has a hairline crack in just about the same place, the base of one of the fan blades...hard to see, but this one has 2 cracks, out of the car, i can hold it up by the small pin and strike it and it has a solid sounding ring, though i am sure that is not the baseline test to see if it is ok...anyway...i have looked at 2 fans now and both are cracked...is this common? fixable? dangerous? of course i am not thrilled at the cost of a new one, somewhere north of €500, so, i will appreciate hearing what my possible courses of action are, oh, it runs fine and before i knew it was there i drove her not hard, but had 'er revved to around 4500, now i barely break out of idle until i resolve... thanks as always for input that is to come, and when i figure this out i get to powder coat the fan, and as of this date its a toss up between factory silver and black and pale yellow, the car is black/black...
ok, the first larger pic is the fan in my car and is the lesser of the 2 cracks, the second smaller pic is my bud's fan out of his car and actually has a much larger crack that goes ever-so-slightly across the body and on to a second fan blade...ænyway, thoughts?

Replace immediately....
Somewhere on here are pictures of failed fans.... and the damage they do. I would feel fortunate to find something like this before it failed.

Not common, but not unknown. Not fixable so far as I know; they're magnesium, so unless you know UltraWelder personally...
Dangerous, yes, in the sense that it could come apart at speed and send big chunks of metal in a thousand directions. You're not likely to be hurt personally, but you'd be stranded and you may wind up needing a new decklid.

I've replaced one of the fans on my cars. I saw a couple cracks starting. I replaced with a new one just to be safe. New fans come with a new bearing which is good. I had mine powder coated while it was new.

Looks like I lost a blade, it took out a couple more, then the entire fan snapped the shaft clean!
The dis colored metal was where the crack proprigated, the shiny metal is the snapped blade.
I didn't damage the hood from flying shards, but it still cost me extra for a new altinator, belts and belt sensor.

It's always better to take precaution in a situation like this. Those cracks look slightly worse than mine, so you might be in a different situ. (legal disclaimer)

I have a couple small cracks on my fan also. My mechanic marked the ends of the cracks with a permanent marker so I can keep track and see if the crack spreads. The mechanic wasn't worried and the crack hasn't spread.
Replace the fan if you are at all worried about it breaking!

i havenät heard of these kinds of failures in g modells, but then , havenät been looking, is there a parallel universe here? also magnesium?, anyway, i am buying a new one...canät trust used product as paint probably hides the early stages of this disease, so, new=peace of mind....again...been looking at related threads and the downside to failure is way deep...

I was freaking out about mine as well. I bought a new fan and hub (pricey!) and then realized that I was actually looking at a casting line, not a crack. So my new fan and hub are sitting in my garage looking pretty (got powdercoated too!)
It is a nice paperweight.

I priced a good used fan, plus new bearing - there was maybe $200 difference between that and a new fan (which comes with new bearing). So, I went with a new fan. Looks pretty, too!
