Default onceovers long overdue introduction

Hello Rennlist,

I've been a member on here for almost 4 years now. Like most of you, I wanted a 911 ever since childhood, and had the wall posters to prove it.

I come from the Audi/VW world so the natural progression was to move up to a Porsche at some point

Here's my daily driver A4 that I built over the past few years. Not much hasn't been touched on the car. Some notable things include:
Built 1.8T engine
GT3076R turbo
S4 interior swap
Euro trunk
Coilovers
Ultrasport front bumper
Custom molded rear bumper
Euro bixenon headlights
The list goes on...

I knew I wanted an aircooled, and flip flopped between old longhoods, 993s, 3.2s, and finally decided that a 964 was the way to go.

4 years ago I graduated from university with a Mechanical Engineering degree and decided that I wanted to take a trip to Europe with my Fiancée (then girlfriend) before I started a full time job.

The plan was to buy a 911 in Poland (beginning of my trip, as I have family there) and make my way around Europe with the end goal of shipping it back to Canada. The problem I soon found was that 911's are quite hard to find in Europe in general, let alone Poland; and when you do find one, they're more expensive than similar examples in North America. The search then shifted to find something worth buying and bringing over that is relatively rare in Canada. I originally searched for BMW E30 wagons, but nothing really stood out to me.

Thats when I found this:

IMG_8589.jpg

A 91 E34 M5. We drove around Europe in it for 2 months, did about 11,000km and 13 countries. The car was dropped off in Dublin and shipped to Canada for me to enjoy.
If anyone is interested, more photos here: https://www.flickr.com/photos/993267...57650939206967

I owned the M5 for a couple years, and had it listed for sale for quite some time. I was in no hurry to sell it as it was a really fun car to drive and got quite a bit of attention from those who knew what it was. Throughout owning the M5 my heart was still set on a 911, and I would browse the classifieds on a weekly basis. An interested buyer from Saskatchewan contacted me and made the trek over to Calgary to come look at the car. A deal was struck and the M5 sold.

Now the real hunt was on. The day the M5 sold, I started hunting rennlist for a 964 worth buying. 20 minutes into my search I found a local car in Guards Red for a reasonable price. I couldn't believe my luck! I promptly contacted the seller and we set up a time to meet.

This was the first 964 I have looked at. The car looked solid with a couple blemishes here and there, and had a funny idle. All in all, it appeared to be worth what the seller was asking and we agreed on getting a PPI done. The car passed the PPI with a couple small issues (CV boots, oil leaks, etc.). I called the seller and we struck a deal. I was a 964 owner, all within one week of selling the M5!

Photo of the car in the listing:

Soon after picking the car up I removed the horrendous tint from the windows and the subwoofers and amps.

It didn't take long before the mod bug bit. I promptly ordered some stuff:
Prototipo steering wheel
Fabspeed heater bypass pipe
Cat delete pipe

The car also had an annoying hard start occasionally. After seaching rennlist extensively I figured out it could be either the fuel pressure regulator or the fuel check valve. Some maintenance parts were ordered:
New FPR
Fuel pump check valve
Fuel filter
Brad Penn 20W50 oil
Mann oil filter
O2 sensor
Spark plugs

Time to dig in!

First time taking a 911 apart. I was a little uneasy initially, but that was soon overcome by excitement.

I pulled the intake manifolds out to clean them and get to the FPR more easily too. Forgot to take a photo

MY OCD kicked in and I saw that a lot of parts had surface rust on them. Might as well take care of that while I'm at it.

I sandblasted everything myself and sent out out for powdercoating. End result:

It all fit back together without any spare parts!

One issue that also bugged me was the faded and cracked tail lights. I opted to sand them, fill the cracks with epoxy and paint them with red tail light tint. Not perfect, but sure beats spending $1000 on a new set!

Also picked up a bumperette delete, don't have many photos of it as the parts were promptly stolen off the car while parked at a shopping mall

Okay. Thats enough for now. Heres a photo of how she sat at the time. Mod bug was continuing to bite, so more changes have happened since, I'll get to that soon.

Okay, I have some free time. Lets add a little more.

Starting off with another project I'm quite proud of. My fiancee and I totally restored her 87 Cabrio and added a 1.8T to the mix. Got it painted Slate Grey too, so it's a Porsche at heart.

Also owned a CTT for a little while, sold it due to some engine issues:

Back to the 964!

I picked up some wheels that needed some serious TLC. Techart Speeline Daytonas:

More on this saga later...

In the meantime, it's apart again!

Not being able to leave anything alone I picked up the following:
Aero mirrors
Cult Werk RS bumper
Cult Werk brake ducts
H4 Headlights
RS fog lenses (couldnt decide between ducts or lenses, so why not both!)

All back together from paint, still need to install fog ducts and H4 lights. RS lenses in for now...

Wow, great cars and nice job of taking care of them! Glad to see another 1.8T'er. I like you, built a few 1.8T's (Jetta and a TT) with the same turbo and recently sold all my cars and parts and picking up a 964 tonight. Never had much luck with REVO so hopefully yours is running top notch. Regardless

I'm actually running Motoza on both the A4 and cabrio. Revo was okay for the GT28 that I had but the GT30 didn't run quite right.

Thanks for the comments guys!

Did you have to drop the engine to get the big tin out, the one that the heater duct goes to? I'd like to powder coat or por15 mine. I just did the two side tins. I hate knowing the other is in ****e shape.

Nice story to go along with the pictures. I was in the MK6 VAG scene for a little before finding a 964. Always loved the B6, although my friends say it can be a bit of a money pit maintenance wise if things go bad.

DobermanDad, you do not have to drop the engine to get that rear tin out. Just need to remove rear bumper and I believe the impact bar. Lower the engine on the engine mounts some (make sure there is a stand under the engine just in case). Then remove the fun hard to get to 6mm bolts. Takes a little work to slide out, but should come out. I have done mine several times.

Cool, I'll be doing this over the winter, would be a good time to reinforce my carrier while I'm at it?
