AFM dead......
It's gone open circuit on the temp sensor.....
So here's the choices;-
a) Buy new from OPC @ £550 exchange
b) Buy second hand ay £100/200 and take a chance
c) Buy a MAF replacement/hot film
Here are my questions........ Has anyone successfully fixed a 5hagged temp sensor inside the AFM? Does anyone run a AFM replacement and what are your views on the set up? Does anyone have a used AFM for sale?
Cheers,

the temp sensor is likely a 10K ohm thermistor. Same thing happened a few years ago to the temp sensor in my rear blower duct ... a bit of surgery to install a new thermistor in place of the, old one, and its been working great for over 10 years now.
It's worth having a look at yours before doing anything too drastic. Why not dismantle it and post a photo of the innards>?

AFM new design
Marc,
I have one more choice to offer:
I've developed a new electronic for the AFM, based on a contactless and therefore wearless reading of the flap angle. It's very responsive due to missing friction and lower moment of inertia.
The NTC will be replaced as well. From the outside, the AFM will look as usual.
If you are interested, please send me a PN.
Regards,
Michael

the afm was a real weakness engineering wise .. gladly dont need one anymore but ...
there's a UK Wheeler Dealers episode with a maserati where they take a very similar AFM to a guy in the country side who has a much better design for the AFM and he replaces the claws/feelers /copper strip with a magnet/potentiometer to do the same task and never break again
.. worth reviewing - I'm sure he could do the same for ours if he's still around.

Alex,
I replace the electromechanical inside with a magnetic based angle measurement. This is done by up-to-date technology, that the developers from the early nineties didn't have...
A microprocessor translates the flap angle into the appropriate voltage.
The thermistor is replaced by a new part.
I will put this on my website during the next days. I'll inform you when it is done.

To finish the saga, I went for option b) and found a second hand AFM for £175........ It works perfectly.
I would eventually like to do away with the AFM, cost is prohibative at the moment.
