Piers how come you haven't registered in the forum there? Would be very cool to have another RS owner(there is another with a red one).

You seem to have been unlucky with the running costs. Those services seem to be at least twice as expensive as any service in our 993 or 996. Was this all from main dealer? Got a clutch for considerably less than that at northway.

All work at specialist, services included loads of £100 jobs which some people would have said 'no don't bother', I'm sure price is right for clutch + starter on a C4. I'll check out other forum!

Hi Guys

Ok at the other end of the scale, here is how much my 90 C2 Cab has cost in the last 2 years.

Bought June 2001 GBP14,500
Registration in Jersey £120
Ignition line £15
New gaitors fitted and health check £50
Service £195 (nothing major)
Set of Tyres £440
Recon Starter motor £90

That does not include any cosmetic upgrades and i have repaired the roof myself and i am due another service any day which i think will run to £500 "touch wood"(private mechanic). Bear in mind the car was already lowered, with cup bypass and chipped, so alot of the expensive work was already done for me.

So 2 years of ownership have cost £910, but this is on the conservative side.

regards

Hi Rob

So pence per mile 'running' costs (ie excluding depreciation as yours is not sold) are:

Rob 40p

Piers 45p

I feel a bit better!

Hi,

I agree with the depreciation aspect - and believe me there was no way I would have bought a Mondeo

But If I would have know that I needed to spend £12K+ on this car (and I still haven't finished) then I would probably have bought a late 993/996 or even a 348, and before the flames start - I do love my 964 and I do enjoy driving it - but there are times that I would like to lynch it from the nearest tree due to frustration.

Perhaps the difference in running costs of various 964's is mileage, and surprisingly it the higher mileage cars that can cost less, because the lower mileage cars still have all the fixing to be done. My car was immaculate - had only done 10K miles in 10 years, but because of this, when I started to do more miles and drive it harder, lots of things started to fail (flywheel, shocks, all sorts of sensors and electrics etc).

So perhaps the wise choice is to buy a high mileage 964 - spend £10K+ on refurbishing it and you get the same thing in the end.

Hi Ade

I think you could well be right. 911 Virgin (aka Prestige & Performance) share your philosophy ie buy high mileage, only problem is they charge low mileage prices for high mileage cars!

If I was buying a 964 again I would go for 80/90K miles with very complete history and check following had been done:

New discs/pads/caliper overhaul
Clutch flywheel
Starter motor
Wishbones
Suspension mount tops
Top end rebuild or if not price to reflect

Having said that IMHO a lower mileage car tends to look smarter than higher mileage and this costs!

Hi Piers

That's a good point - and I my mind, the body work is actually the most important factor of buying a car - everything else can be relatively easily repaired (if costly) but it's a different game repairing bodywork successfully.

Ps. Sorry to see that your car has gone - did you tell the new owner about us?

Piers, I've done about 11k miles. I too was one for the 'go ahead and do everything', this includes all minor things like bonnet struts, wipers, a/c sensors etc. I still think you were a bit unlucky with your services, mine were roughly £1k less each.

Rob, I cannot understand how you paid only £90 for a starter motor! I mean, the part alone is £250 for a recon one (at JZ), plus a good 3 hours fitting. Also, £195 on servicing in 2 years? Hmmm, you should really have the car serviced yearly or every 12k miles, whatever happens first, and alternate services (as big one, then a small one). Anyways, I'd say you've been very lucky!

Hi

Riccardo, Only bushes need replacing on the starter motor, it did not fail it just started make a noise that annoying me after a while.

I am also willing to repair things myself, stripped and relaced hood gears (machined new fasteners), electrical fault Porsche specialist could not find after 10 hours (no charge), interior lights, windscreen washers, heaters, rear blower motor. I am sure there is more

You have to understand i live on a 12 mile long island, it would take me at least 4 years to do 12k. Most cars over here are consdered high milage at 40k.

There is 1 official porsche dealer and 1 specialist, neither are any good. trick is to find an honest mechanic who knows what he is doing.

My mechanic who only charges me about £15 an hour (friend of family) he has thorough grounding in Ferrari and Porsche.

I too was suprised by the cost of the last service but i was told the car was in excellent shape because the last owner really looked after it. As i was out of the island for 4 months this year and my car was up on jack stands, i will not get it serviced until xmas time(usually each calander year).

I hope this dismisses your fears that i am mistreating my pride and joy.

Regards
Rob

Rob,

Sorry, I confess I was a bit concerned there for a sec, but that was only cause I was erroneously judging things by London standards (thats £45 an hour to start with...). Hey, maybe I should move to Jersey too! Mind you, do you ever manage to hit any decent speeds out there?

40 mph max, so not a good place to own a performance car. France is close but those gandarme's love to throw the book at the Roast Beef.

Cheers
