First part of my service I thought I'd change the fan & alternator drive belt.
Tip #1; not sure why you need the strange looking £22 c-spanner: a 10mm 12-point spline socket fits into the alternator shaft as per the 993. Set of 5 sockets cost £6 from my local motor factors.
Now to the problem -getting the second, inner pulley off without stripping the 5mm allen bolts. I left them in as they started stripping straight away - will need to remove them with a chisel or special tool. Until then I have one new belt and one old!! Took 30 minutes

John,
Try a vise-grip before chiseling the heads off. Works for me most of the time. A lot less messy and easier than trying to reclaim the heads from the never world down under the crank pulley.
good luck

John - did mine last week and encountered the same problem. I ended up drilling the head of the only bolt I couldn't remove. Only took a couple of minutes, did NO damage whatsoever to anything else and the remaining stud came out easily.
The hardest part was making the decision to do it!
What I couldn't understand was the laziness of the previous fan belt changer who put rounded-head bolts back on.
It IS worth doing the second belt. You'll regret it if it breaks.
PS - new set of 3 bolts cost total £1.15 I think from OPC.
In my view, every fan belt change should be acompanied by a set of new bolts.

Thanks Bob, its great to have a tip from the 'Tim Allen' of the 993 world! Cheers.
Rob
mine weren't stripped, but I noticed that the 5mm hex socket wasn't a really snug fit and the bolts seem VERY soft.
I will try vice grips & replace the studs.

Finally completed the job last night. Used vicegrips to loosen off two of the hex head bolts in 2 minutes. The third took 35c minutes!!!Eventually had to hammer on a 9mm socket and extension through the hole where the hood latch is situated..this after attacking it with vice grips, a chisel and alot of swearing!!!

What do you guys use to keep the fan still when you remove the 24mm nut on the fan shaft?
My belt in the middle of the air conditioning belt and the other belt is wobbly and loose, so I think I need to tighten the whole thing. But I can't get the bolt loose!! What's the trick? My 65 911 came with a special tool to keep things still...

mine wouldn't tighten up in-line , so the two halves of the pulley are wider on one side !!!
i solved this problem by leaving the job 'til after new-year , and going into manchester to drink lots of vodka/redbulls .
worked for me !!!!
it was only through seeing this thread that i remembered i had a problem
