Default Reversing lights problem

Guys,

Yesterday it was pointed out to me that neither of my reversing lights is working. I find it strange that they both blew simultaneously, so was wondering if there could be any other causes for this?

Recently (3 weeks ago) I had a new starter motor fitted. Could this have anything to do with it?

Alternatively, is there a fuse which could have blown?

Thanks in advance for any help.

Surely there must be a sensor or a switch on the gearbox which registers when reverse is engaged. Perhaps that is the culprit?

Hi Riccardo,

I had exactly the problem you're describing, neither of my reverse lights worked!!!
Culprit: The reverse switch on the left side of the gearbox (When you are looking at the engine fan toward the car's nose).
Cost of the piece: 70.-CHF that's about 50EUR.
Easy? YES It's a DIY job no need of specialist just a lift to get to the switch.
Remove the undertray, look at the left side of the gear box, unplug the cables to the switch, unscrew the switch and....reverse procedure to fit the new switch. Time max 20 Min.
Oh and before I forget I have no idea of the part number. But you easily see the switch on any Gearbox diagram

Hope This helps

Dear Riccardo,
Fuse 14 looks after the reverse lights and fog lights.
There is a switch activated by the gearstick as pointed out by Thomas. There is also a relay, the rear fog light relay R01. I have seen this removed before.
A bad earth can also take them out. However remove the bulbs and check they are not blown.
Ciao,
Adrian

Jim, Thomas and Andrian,

Thanks for your help. I'll start with checking the bulbs. Don't think its the relay or fuse as the rear and front fog lights work just fine. Finally if all else fails I'll get them to replace the reverse switch...

Thomas,

I found the part number as 914.613.541.02, is this it? Weird that its a 914 part no!

Does this look like the right location forn it? If so it doesn't look that easy to access...

Riccardo,

sorry for the delay I had no opportunioty to get to an Internet acces this week.

Sorry I cannot tell you for sure but I think part N°20 which you highlighted is the switch you need!!! In my mind it was on the left side of the gearbox, whether the part you mention is on the right side!!! But ask you OPC he will show you tje correct part to be sure

No IT'S absolutely not difficult to access. It's a bolt on on the left side of the gearbox. You're absolutely not looking toward major difficultie's. As I told you you just need a lift to access to the gearbox... unbolt the switch put in the new switch and you're done!!! It worked for me so it should work for you.

Beside funny story...I replaced yesterday the same switch on my VW GOLF GTI III, just the price of the VW thing was 12CHF about 8EUR instead of the 50EUR for the C2.

Regards Thomas

All, looks like an old thread, but I am having a similar issue with a few minor differences.

Both front fog and both reverse lights do not work. I realize these share the same relay (R01) and thought that the relay may be the culprit. I pulled the relay and plugged it into R23 (the horn) and the horn worked just fine, so the relay is good. I tested fuse #14 in the fuse tester and that checked out as well, so I know it is not a fuse issue. The only thing I haven't checked is the switch, but if it was a faulty switch, the fog lamps should still be working right? I haven't actually checked the bulbs on the fog lamps, so that could be the issue as well. I bought two new reverse lights, but they are still not working. Any thoughts???? Thanks!

Check the wire to the switch. It's a common failure.

If the wire broke off the pins...get a solder sucker- the pin is hollow- so you heat and melt the solder and then with either a sucker or a wick, suck the molten solder out. Then slip a newly twisted wire end in, re-solder and it's as good as new. If you add a little heat shrink, that joint will last longer.

And if the wire is connected to the pins...move on to the next potential fix...but that's the most common.

Hi Eric - The R01 relay is for the rear fog light and the reverse lights, so check the bulbs on the reverse lights and possibly the reverse switch. As for the front fog lights, I believe R31 is the relay and check the wires as Rob pointed out. If you need help let me know, my front fogs are in a box so we can plug them in your car to see if they work, and I can also take my switch out in 5 minutes so we can test it as well.

Thanks, Laurent! I'll be in touch to pick a day to put this on your lift and do some trouble shooting. That would be great to try your reverse switch and fog lamps. Talk soon.

Thanks for the advice! I really appreciate it. I'll let you know what pans out.

Folks can anyone confirm what I sincerely hope to be the case: that the the reverse light switch is ABOVE the trans fill plug and therefore no danger of (nice new expensive) trans fluid leaking out when replaced?

I replaced my reverse lights switch a few years ago and there was no leakage from the transmission. The entire procedure took about 60 seconds to remove the bad one and screw in the new switch and reattach the wiring.
