Indeed, it arrived late to the shoot sadly - work commitments by the painter. Although I guess they coulda included since it was photographed even if not in the main cover photo. I suppose as the owner wasn't there they couldn't ask him questions. I dunno.

It's owned a NatSaJak iirc his forum name. Car was painted by L9O favourite LeMass Automotive. Gorgeous thing that one

2015 is going to be a big event filled year for the L9O. As ever no membership fees so join in. Oh and of course there are the regular monthly 'Lunch & Drives' and UK based track days to look forward to.

We'll be sure to post pics here :thumb:

We also have a few things up our sleeve not event related for this year, including an article on a famous online publication...

L9O Spotlight!

Today we spent time catching up with L9O'r James S about his 964 Outlaw.

James found his car through a fellow 'speed freak' and friend. James made him promise that if he would ever sell it to give hime first refusal.

The stars aligned... and the phone rang! The 964 in question is finished in gorgeous Maritime Blue with some great choice RS inspired mods.

"The car was bought as a basic RS style with buckets and Bilstein HDs"

Says James,

But the modifying bug hit, so the car was sent to the body shop. The sunroof was deleted, a rear wing replaced, an all important cage fitted for track outings and a fresh lick of paint.

Furthermore he added a Wong chip to free up some HP, two exhaust bypasses to increase flow and the volume of that glorious flat six. James tells us that his favourite mods have been weight loss and a limited slip differential.

When asked where he enjoys the car the most,

"On early morning drives with friends and the L9O, they're a like minded but diverse group of fun individuals."

Obviously James is deeply in love with his stunning 964, but when we asked what could tempt him away from it he simply replied,

"I seriously think I would have to add not replace. I do covet a GT3RS 997.2 or in dreamland the ultimate - Carrera GT."

This Porsche is his first one and he's now owned it for two and a half great years. His future plans for it include HID lights and new gauge faces. Long term he'll be swapping out his current suspension for some PSS10 fully adjustable coil-overs so the car can sit lower without loosing compliance and some RS anti roll bars.

James gave us some sage advice for the potential 964 buyers out there,

"Learn as much as you can before commencing your search and seek advice from the owner communities - Rennlist and of course the L9O."

Overall James is just thrilled he bought the car, it's become a part of his family and given him more enjoyment than he could ever imagine.

L9O Spotlight!

Today we caught up with prolific motoring journalist and fellow L9O'r - Mr. Johnny Tipler.

Johnny is famous in Porsche circles for being a major contributor to many magazines about the marque. He's written countless articles on motoring and has had over 35 books published.

But most of all we're fans of his because he's also a jolly great guy and he owns a 964!

Johnny had a Porsche baptism of fire, as a child he remembers seeing his dad go trough a hedge backwards in a 356 that belonged to a friend. Suddenly Porsche had his attention.

"I followed Porsche fortunes in endurance racing avidly. Unfortunately I couldn't afford one till my dad died. In a way he had a share in the 3.2 I bought since I traded his Audi 80 at Williams-Crawford for it in 2000."

Says Johnny,

With so many years racked up as a Porsche journalist he's met many of the greats in motoring history. Of course we had to ask him to recount some memorable encounters!

"Alois Ruf is such a cool dude, has to be up there with the top interviewees. John Fitzpatrick is great too, very friendly and happy to talk for as long as you need about his race history with RSRs, 935s and 962s. I could go on..."

When recollecting his favourite motoring event Johnny tells us about La Carrera Panamericana, in a 914 with Sarah Bennett-Baggs. They started 95th and finished 95th out of 114 starters! His book on the event paints the picture beautifully.

Obviously to many of us Johnny has the absolute dream job. Who wouldn't want to travel the world driving Stuttgart's finest, meeting Porsche legends and writing about the experience? Although of course it's not a job without hurdles...

Johnny reveals,

"The challenges include getting press accreditation from certain race circuits, organising strategies and itineraries for following a long haul event like Monte Carlo Rally or Tour Auto; but actually being involved covering an event such as Le Mans Classic or Spa Six Hours, driving an interesting Porsche - which is most of them - or interviewing a famous Porsche personality, is a real buzz."

But then must come the graft of expressing these experiences in words. Johnny describes it as an art form, tailoring an article to suit the readership whilst making it enjoyable and amusing to read.

"If the art department does a decent job with the photos and the layout I'm satisfied when the feature is in print."

Ok let's talk about his 964 The Peppermint Pig. Johnny's car is rather famous, often featured as his 4 wheeled trusty companion in the articles he writes. There's a real bond between Johnny and his readers. We think this is down to how he takes his readers on journeys with him and The Peppermint Pig through his articles.

We pick up 911&Porsche World Magazine not just because of the great articles but also to find out what Mr. Tipler has been up to!

Anyway more about the car...

"I found the Peppermint Pig in Germany when I went to interview Erwin Kremer and then Michael Roock of Roock Racing. I'd gone over in my 3.2 Carrera, which had recently been repainted after being stolen and the subject of a £9K insurance claim. So I was up for moving on from that, and there, in Roock racing showroom, amongst the RSs and RSRs was the Peppermint Pig. It was love at first sight, and when I discovered it was a regular C2 and not an RS, plus Roock was eager to repatriate my 3.2 (a left hooker), the Pound was stronger than the Euro, and it was an easy trade."

Recalls Johnny,

But why a 964? He loves the look of them as he sees it as a tidy blend of classic and modern. Obviously we couldn't agree with him more as these are fabled words in 964 circle. The Pig is set up with Roock's suspension set up and the future holds a new ECU and induction kit courtesy of Specialist Components.

So after having written so many books on a variety of subjects that range from heavy construction equipment, Harley Davidsons (they're air-cooled don't you know!), Ayrton Senna's 3 years at Lotus, Alfa Romeo Giulia GTAs what is his favourite book?

"...the new tome entitled 'Porsche Carrera: the air-cooled era, 1953 to 1998' is the one to go for!"

Johnny Recommends, and a damn good read it is too.

Clearly we must tell you how Johnny came about to become an L9O member. He was contacted by L9O'r James S through 911 & PW who invited the magazine to come down to our annual pilgrimage to Spa Francorchamps for a weekend on track...

"Great bunch of people, pretty much like-minded with a voracious appetite for 964s. Doing the article was great fun, and we've kept in touch since. If you want a single word to some up that weekend, it was BANGING!"

Says our dear London 964 Owner,

When asked about any tips for a 964 owner, Johnny preaches well by telling us to stick with it, get some winter tyres on and enjoy it all year round. Finishing with sound advise,

"They need to be driven."

We believe him to be absolutely spot on with that commandment. These cars don't enjoy being parked up and left for seals to dry up and oil to settle. Get out there and drive!

Cheers,
The L9O Team

Unusual to see that many great 964s in one place at the same time. Beautiful sight to behold. I wish I had a group like this to hang out with in the states.

That would be great. In fact we've been talking of organising a national L9O meet. Somewhere more north so everyone can get involved.

Cheers, Yup the biggest turn out we've had at a the L9O monthly Drive & Lunch is about 40 IIRC. This month we were about 20 I'd say. If you're ever in the UK hit us up of course.

NEWS!

The eagle followers amongst you may have noticed a change... we're branding as the ' World 964 Owners ' to encapsulate new chapters that are joining.

The S9O (Seattle 964 Owners) covers the Pacific North West of America whilst The M9O (Montreal 964 Owners) covers Canada. These chapters are just like the L9O - a group of like minded 964 owners/ Rennlisters, who just want to get out there and drive. The chapters are essential events 'organisers'.

All the chapters are FREE and open to all as ever and forever. Keep your eyes peeled for full info, events, articles through Rennlist and social media. Big thanks to this great forum, without none of this would have been possible.

Also do check out the website... lots of articles for your reading pleasure.

Oh and here is a pic from one of the recent L9O meets.

Cheers,
