Default Fan crack?

Hi all,

Please have a look at the picture of my cooling fan. I am not sure if this crack is anything to worry about. It does not go all the way through and in fact, it almost looks like a deep scratch more than a crack. It is about an inch long and it (hard to see in photo) goes around the inside diameter for about 1/2 " too - so it's kind of 'L' Shaped.

Given that these cost a kings ransom to replace - just was hoping to leave it for a while?

Sure would appreciate some input/advice.

Hmmm I wouldn't risk it. These things go with one hell of a bang when they let go.

Yes, replace it or else it'll start delaminating some more and could cause damage. The bad news is that the fan is not cheap, the good news is that it is fairly easy to replace. Mine was cracking at the blades and here is how I replaced it.

I've had to replace one of my car's fans due to cracking too. Maybe we are reaching the age where time becomes an issue on parts.

I replaced mine on my 92 964 for similar cracking. I ordered a new one which included the bearing pressed in the back for ~$400 at Sunset in Portland (no affiliation)- oh I just noticed you are Down Under- I suppose shipping there might be costly.

It's the nature of Magnesium, it becomes brittle over time!

When mine went, we replaced it with an aluminum one, don't remember the cost though.

Interesting... where did you get an aluminum one from?

To the OP: replace the thing. I paid $411 and $15 in shipping. This ended up being almost $100 less than the price at the OPC here. I can't imagine it being much more down under.

You don't want yours to go since most likely it will take out a belt and the belt tension sensor. Which costs about $100... so purchasing at OPC ahead of time would've been cost neutral.

When my fan disintegrated it took out all 3 belts and put a large dent in the engine cover, so I had to repaint that too!
