Default Steering rack adjustment??

Can the C2T steering rack be adjusted and how?

I feel like there is a bit of play in it (3/4")when driving.

I have 18" wheels and belive I mesured the toe in at 3/8"+.

Is there any rubber in the steering system that can be replaced to tighten up?

Thanks in advance.

Keith

I don't know if this will help the problem.

You may want to get the steering rack brace used in later Turbo and RS cars. It is part number 993.347.131.02 and you need two 8 X 80 bolts part number 999.218.103.09. Here is is installed, it spans the 2 green bolts:

Thanks for the info. Somthing new for me to learn and a great pic.

I think your rack is non power asssist so I don't know if that has any thing to do with the added brace.

From your pic, looks like the rack is mounted in rubber, is that the case?
Is there any other rubber in the steering system or tie rods?

Do you recall any adjustment screws on the rack?

I'd like make my steering tight!

The strut will fit power and manual racks, you are correct my rack is manual.

The rack itself is mounted in rubber as you see, I don't know if this is a wear item but you may want to replace it. The rack mounting bushings were changed in 1993 to part number 964.347.137.07 and this part number is used by the 3.8 RSR as well, harder rubber ???, I don't know.

The tie rods have rubber couplings in them (they are under the accordion boots) and the C4 and RS come with harder rubber in these than the C2 and Turbo, you may want to try them part number is 964.347.058.00. RSR/Carrera Cup tie rod couplings are hardest rubber of all and are part number 964.347.058.70, may be hard to find though and/or $$$$.

An alternative I have heard of is that the later 993 tie rod fits and is a better part, but have NO experience with this conversion at all.

You may want to look at your rack and couplings while someone turns the steering wheel back and forth. Your play may be in your rack and not the rubber at all as you seem to already suspect. I don't know how to adjust out play in the rack.

Hope this helps

You may be able to get through Porsche Motorsport. Set I bought through Gert was $100 Euro each side.

Dear Keith,
To answer your original question the answer is no. The power steering rack cannot be adjusted. I should also warn you that there are two types of power steering rack in use. 1989-1991 model years use a piston type rack to transmit the power. From model year 1992 this was changed to a rotary valve system. A completely new steering rack. All the posters advising you change parts above are using the rotary valve type of rack or no rack.
I never advise that you attempt to adjust out a wear problem. You need to find the components that are worn and replace them. If they can be updated to newer parts, especially seeing as you have 18 inch wheels then do so. However tread with caution because some of the updated parts especially RS/RSR parts may not fit properly if at all.
Find the problem component(s) first then solve it. A wheel alignment check may help find the problem because when adjustments are required the mechanic will often tell you that he cannot do it because this is worn. I would certainly be checking the wishbone bushings and steering arms. One question, under heavy braking in a straight line can you feel anything through the steering or does your turbo want to pull one way or the other?
Ciao,
Adrian
