Default What are THE years & options in 964?

If a guy had a great low mile 993 (less than 20K miles, C2S) what year and options of a 964 would complement the 993? Is there a "special" year, options, color that are the most sought after in a 964?

I know this stuff is always up for debate depending on the person but what I learned in 993 world is that if you go survey a bunch of 993 geeks there is a pattern to what is most desirable. I suspect there is one(i.e. pattern) for 964 drivers too.

Barring turbo models, IMHO, the three most sought after 964's:

1) RS
2) RS America
3) 1994 C4 wide body aka "turbo look"

All the above were very limited production models. Personally, I love #3 above.

The 993 went through big hp changes and and and through it's years of production. Mostly being improved...

The 964 went through a series of bandaid fixes to resolve engineering blunders and in the case of the head gasket leak, to stop a new type of owner from complaining about oil dripping on his freshly painted perfectly clean garage floor. Garage floors by the end of the eighties for many porsche owners were for showing a car and not for getting dirty. Their subsequent complaints caused the price of the 964 to plummet, and the cars were thereby picked up by actual wrenching car people who then began to actually sort out Porsches issues...and now...basically you have pre 91 and post 91 cars (aside from the special low production cars) which for me means that you get fewer available shock and strut options for the pre 91 models now, but that's about it. You want 4wd or 2wd. Pick one and find a car that has been maintained well. The only year that was strikingly different is 89, but only because no airbags and lighter flywheel and only 4wd....

In short, anyone that looks for a 964 and says "it has to be xxx year, is either looking for a garage queen collector car with zero miles (which is fine too) or if he is looking to drive the car, will be missing out on a lot of good and great cars only to pay a premium to get the same, but "the" year...

Just my 2 cents

Later cars do have some nice tweaks like R134 AC, plastic intake, and aero mirrors. With that being said I would buy based on condition not the model year.

+964. If you want to know all about the various 964 models. I recommend picking up Adrian's book. He lists all of the year to year changes and the oodles of options.

Good luck in your search.

I would say find yourself a C4 targa, I don't have the production #'s in front of me, but I am thinking there are not many out there.

In the US I'd go for #3.
