Default '90 Targa project

Against the advice of many - I just bought a '90 Targa project car. It's got 61,229 miles and is all there but it doesn't run and hasn't moved for years. The price was low enough that I couldn't resist and - odd as it seems - I like Targa's. I had 3 before this one - 4 if you count my first Porsche - a 914 in the late 70's. It will get towed home tomorrow and I may be sleeping in it for a day or two when my wife finds out. I plan to poke around it and see how bad it is. Worst case - I'll call a salvage yard that buys Porsches. I'm hoping to save the car and drive it, but I don't want to rip into it and end up with boxes of parts and a rolling chassis so I'll proceed with caution. Anyway - I'm likely to be hunting for parts that are better than what I find and might even consider an engine if this one is terrible. So - if you have any info on cast off parts in good condition - let me know. I'm not looking to build a hot rod as I'm still somewhat intimidated by my GT3. Thus stock bits left over from a race car build might find their way onto this car. I'm planning to put her up on jack stands and take my time. I'm not a mechanic - but can do many basics. I'm open to suggestions and referrals to informative 964 threads - especially those that alert a guy to tricks or traps in the 964 mechanical systems. Pics when I get them. Thanks

There's someone on ebay selling a race engine for 12K or somewhere in that ballpark. It's a 3.6L. Can't find the link now, but a quick search will probably get you there.

Didn't find the race engine - but there were several 964 and 993 engines there. I always wondered how hard a conversion to a 993 engine would be in a 964.

It happens sometimes!
Try something like photo bucket. You can upload you photos to it, then you will have options on how to load photos here. It's easy, even is can do it!

I happen to have a fairly original 90 C2 Targa that is used daily and if you need assistance with what was originally on the car I may be able to assist. My only mods are a cup pipe with a chip from 911 Chips and 4 pot calipers in the rear.

Picking up a 1992 targa here.

The unloved targa might do now like the unloved 964 a while back

I am sure that you wife and son will not be too upset with you getting another Targa. They did not want you to sell the white one. BTW it has been getting exercised regularly and is great fun. Good luck with the project look forward to seeing some pictures of what you have to work with.

I'm glad to hear from you and know the white targa is getting good use. I think I know your DE instructor if you were recently at Road America.

I may need to buy back some of the spare I sold you if they are idle. Time will tell.

I already know I need stuff like a glove box, rear seat backs, the heat/ac controller from the dash, and the blower motor assembly from the engine compartment. Minor stuff considering I'm assuming a hefty engine rebuild or a good running replacement engine. The stereo is gone too. On the positive - the body appears to be pretty straight and the paint may be cleanable to passable status. I'm sure I'll find many surprises - hopefully some good ones too.

The picture shows the car as it was when I picked it up. It has a top. I just removed it to get a better look at the interior condition and begin counting the missing bits.

I'm in Batavia. I imagine you'll be able to drop by in your Targa long before I will.
