Default Do I trade up to a 993 ???

I currently own a 1991 UK 964 cab in red which has done 98000miles and I am very fond of it. I have been offered a 1994 UK 993 cab in midnight blue, which has done 80000 miles.
Do I take the plunge. I can get the 993 for £24000( yet to see the car), which I believe is a good price, but then have the hassle of selling my 964. What would I get for it ?
What are the main differences/advantages of the 993 ?

Thanks.

Neil,
On a more sensible note,(FWIW) I have owned my 964 for just over four years now and have had pretty much everything that could go wrong with it go wrong. I have been in the fortunate position of being able to repair everything that needed it on the way and I really couldn't face the whole process all over again. I believe the 993 suffers from pretty much the same sort of problems as the 964 so for me I dont think I would go through all that pain again........unless it was a 993 Carrera 4s!
From the few people that I have spoken to that have owned both cars the 993 has a much smoother delivery of power and is easier to drive and subsequently does not feel as fast.
Cheers

Neil

In this case it is very difficult to tell. Some would tell that the difference would be £10K or so but in this case I believe it will be less. If you count on say £16-18K for your RHD(?) cab, then you probably have the right picture.

Whether you should or not? Well, if you want to then you definitely should. Don't do it just because you think there might be less problems with a newer car though. Has the 993 had a new wiring harness installed? If not, that is a possible problem right away.

Like they said, 993s have their own problems - creaking screens, faulty wiring harnesses.

I'd keep the sorted 964, if that's what you have.

Buying from 'cold', I'd go for the 993

Hi Neil, I think it comes down to 'the look'...and if in your heart you prefer the 993 look then its time for a change !
If you are neutral about the look, then although the 993 has some mechanical improvements eg hydraulic tappets, more user friendly handling of the rear, there's not a big case to go from a high mileage 12 yr car that works and is well sorted to the almost equally high mileage 9 yr 'devil you dont know'.
If you want to change cars I'd always start from selling/trading in current car unless there was a massive financial incentive to buy the next car first......

Thanks for the replies and yes it is a RHD 964, so is the 993. Sorry but LHD's are not for me..
I am off to see the 993 tomorrow and to see if it has the same affect as the 964 did when I first saw it, if not then I will walk away...
What do I need to look out for on 993's, when I give it the onceover ?

NeilR, I have done (sort of) what you are thinking about. I went from a sorted out 1990 C2 Cab to a beautiful 1997 C4S. Although I loved my cab and had just put a ton of cash into it to get it exactly the way I wanted, I have no regrets.

Hi Mr Adscab911,
So is it much better/ faster? Did it cost more than the £10,000/$16,000 to change. Do you think you would have been as happy with a standard 993?

Cheers

Neil,

In my opinion its not worth the difference in price, unless you prefer the 993 styling. The early 993s are very much like the late 964s and at any rate are becoming old cars now, so things are likely to go wrong. Plus, 10k miles difference is nothing.

I had a 92 964 tip, traded it for a 94 993 tip, currently looking to get back into a 964 manual car. My 993 feels to heavy, most likely due to the 18" I have on, plus it feels quite weighted done. I liked my 964 becasue it felt very light especially riding on the 16" stock rims. In addition, the sounds are much nicer and more traditional to me in the 964 compare to the 993. Mechanical valve noises are part of the 911 traditon, the 993 sounds quite bland just being a throaty rumble.

I think the ultimate 911 would be the 964 with a manual box. It has the power of the current cars with a lighter more tossale chasiss. I call it the "raw" appeal.

Keep the 964, it doesn't get better than that, it just gets more refine and cushy as you move up the development cycle.

Hi Dave,
The 993 feels faster but not as "raw" as the 964. Plus, even though I have the RSR's on the 993, there is no comparing the sound of the 3.6 with the top down. In my opinion, again, just my opinion, the 993 does everything faster with much less effort. Plus, again, in my opinion, the C4S is the best looking car Porsche ever made. So to answer you questions, I do not think I would have been happy with any other 993 except the S, but a cab could work as well. Secondly, unfortunately the 964, especially early ones have been hit very hard by depreciation. Great for buyers, not good for a seller. And again unfortunately, 993 widebodies are selling at a premium over other 993's. So in other words, I got hammered! But again, I've never looked back.

Ad,

I must admit, I rather like the C4S (don't like widebodied 911s and I prefer the 964 to the 993, so it all makes perfect sense!) - any chance of a pic?
