Default how to check O2 sensor is working ?

Hi
over the last 8 years ,my CO readings at the MOT have always been extremely low :0.01,0.008,0.005...up to 0.132 last year
This year ,reading was 4 !!!
As it happens ,i had disconnected /reconnected the o2 sensor plug to take the cat out when i did my cam covers
Main culprit seems to be a poor connection
I have rechecked it and It looks ok
Is there a way of checking now if the O" sensor is working or should i go to the MOt place and have another test done ?
Could there be someyhing more sinister behind this (vast) increase ?
Other question ,if i have driven the car for a few hundred miles with the O2 sensor not connected (hence to rich a mix) could this have damaged the cat for ever ?
As always ,i would be grateful for your views and ecperiences
Peter

Wow this is a nice pc information to have, going to bookmark this also I have random notes such as this I print out and put in a folder I have in the trunk so if out in the country or someplace and I need it I can maybe find what I am looking for and have pictures also procedures on how to check things out.. Ya never know ... I had some work done on my car a bit ago and the indee said the O2 sensor was slow and that was it for the price of a cat and engine work it will be worth it just to get a new one..... Thanks again for the information .. Good PPL on here .. Thumbs up to 53

Default O2 Sensor Wiring

After looking at my O2 sensor I found it did not match the print above ...on pin 2 I have 12 volts engine side this is coming from a 15 amp fuse also shown in the print provided .. it also shows pin 3 on the sensor side to be Sensor itself as it has a shielded wire going from it to the DME ....
