I'm a longtime 964 admirer and came across one recently worth picking up. It has its things that need love but that's all part of the plan. I've been incredibly impressed with the knowledge on these boards. You guys are incredible. Anyway, while driving over the weekend coming off from a stop it idled roughly and died when the accelerator was pressed. Started again and same thing. First thought was DME relay, which I replaced with no effect (at least I now have my spare). I'm thinking ISV cleaning next. Any opinions? Thanks in advance. I'm looking forward to interacting as I bring my new prize back to its glory.
Welcome to Rennlist and 964 ownership. Did anyone mention that we like to see pictures yet?
As for the engine stalling, can you give us more details about the car? Is it stock or are there any engine mods such as a lightweight flywheel or DME chip? When was the last time it had a full service? Have the coils and spark plug wires been changed? Do you have access to a Hammer or Scantool? Do you have any DME error codes?
- Verify that the TSB for AFM connector has been carried out (link)
- Airbox is connected tightly to AFM body, elect. connector tightly fitted, and vacuum canister properly connected
- ISV valve, operational and clean
- Battery grounds tight
- All connections to and from coils properly seated (good time to verify both working (see threads on verifying coils - should be able to run on one)
- Engine oil level - verify not overfilled (see threads on how to check level w/dipstick and verify gauge)
Any recent work done on the car? Oil change, plugs, airfilter etc?
Welcome. As this was a recent purchase - if you didn't have a PPI (pre-purchase inspection) performed, then now would be a good time for a PPI (post-purchase inspection).
Thanks for all the great feedback already. i won't get a chance to work on it over the weekend but you have given me some places to start. Very much appreciated.
A little more background to answer some of the other questions. It is stock and I didn't mention tiptronic so no flywheel issues. The distributor is vented. When it runs there are no lights on. The lights do come on when starting so the lights themselves are operational, not sure if all the sensors work properly as well. I suppose the Hammer could help with that. I do not currently have one but am trying to see if there is anyone local who might have one I can borrow until I get my own. No good service records but the owner says the oil was changed about 200 miles ago. I took a risk with this car and hope it pays off but I honestly got it for a good enough deal that I am still ahead if I have to put some money and time into it. That is part of the fun of it anyway, I could go find one that was already perfect and pay for it but I want this to be a project to enjoy as well.
I am in the New Orleans area, not sure if any other members are but I look forward to be a part of the community here.
