Default C4 Targa - A fresh start

I have had my C4 Targa for about 15 months and loved owning her. If truth be told I bought with my heart and fell in love at first sight.
Although a life long Porsche nut this was the first 964 I'd driven and I loved the torque, the way she hunkers down in the twisty bits and oh that noise...

The previous owner was a fallen from grace property developer in the midst of legal ranglings and needed to sell one of his cars. The Ferrari had been his dream car so that was staying for now.

The '64 had no real history as such, no service book. But the receipts for the last 11 years of ownership totalled £18k. This didn't include yearly oil changes or the respray (more on that later) as he paid cash, but did include £5k engine and £2k labour and parts at the same time.

In the first few months I fettled with the interior, changed the oil level sensor, oil pressure sensor o-ring, oil and filter, new tyres (after a spin - nuff said), RS style floorboard and a few rubbers here and there to combat the water ingress in the foot wells.

Last summer I had the seats 'reconditioned' and steering wheel sprayed grey (it had previously been sprayed black and was cracking). The seats aren't wearing that well so I plan to do them again this winter.

Oh, nearly forgot, the roof. This has been a constant battle, which I may have won! I got the targa top nice and tight to the windscreen so no wind noise even above 90. I have had to make two new clips as it kept popping out of the original ones everytime I hit a pot hole, living in Surrey this got a tad annoying.

I recently took her down to 9e for a Geo which turned into an inspection. James found a few issues (13 but whose counting) that needed attention, this put the geo on hold as it really doesn't seem so important now.

So, we're up to date, here's what the future holds, some are winter projects, some are underway and others perhaps just dreams right now.

1) Calliper overhaul - big plate lift issues on all the callipers, but the rears are worse. One side on each not closing.
2) Clutch hard line twisted.
3) both drop links need replacing - is there anyway of just replacing the bushes?
4) bushes on front wishbones perished
5) Exhaust mounting bolt missing - cutting into heat shield
6) Clutch biting low and needs replacing
7) various oil leaks from engine (although it doesn't drop much)
8) Oil return pipe corroded and previously (badly) repaired
9) fuel lines corroded
10) NSF jacking point collapsed
11) play in universal joints and one UJ boot needs replacing
12) play in front dampers
13) bodywork - rusty rear quarter and some bubbles above shark fins and where wing joins scuttle

She'll be one sorted Targa when you're done Nate

Who did your leather re-dye and what were the issues?

About the push the button on this myself next week, so would be good to know.

HI Chris, could be a fine car...or perhaps a bottomless pit, guess time will tell.

I used a guy out in Essex who was well recommended by a rennlister on here. But in honesty i found his work a tad shoddy. He overpainted the blue beading, sprayed the handbrake but didn't remove the two screws which would have meant the centre console wasn't oversparayed swell. The biggest issue was colour, I swear its more purpley/pearly than grey in some lights. After a year its lost its luster and the blue beading is showing through. He even forgot to tighten the seat bolts up which was pretty disconcerting the first time i touched the brakes...

Thanks for the heads-up bud. I'm going to use Furniture Clinic as heard good things and used their DIY kit before. Ill ask about a "wear warranty".

Thanks Pelican and SilverT

Just got the new rear discs on, handbrake adjusted as per Boxeys instructions, so much better.

I have a copper flange kit ordered to remake the hard brake lines but as the rear calipers aren't back I can't start bending metal just yet anyway.

Ok, so it feels like its been a while but I have made a start on my list of To-Do's.

I have had the rear callipers refurb'd and powder coated inc new seals by Thomas of PorscheCallipers.co.uk. Really nice job it is too.

There now back on the with new Pagid discs and pads. I sorted new bolts and washers too as the old ones were a pig to get off.

This gave me a good opportunity to finally sort the handbrake adjustment which is now lovely and tight.

Got her out for a short run this morning and they felt great!

Next...drop links and pinched clutch hardline

So tonight I had some fun. A few hours under the car then a top off drive through London to cool off. Mother Nature even gave me a lightning display!

Started off with the drop links. They came off nice and easy.

The old rubbers were shot, there was still some gluepy greasy in there and the the ball joints seemed nice and tight.

I needed a dremel with cutting disc to cut the old metal spring clips as they were rusted on. The new covers slipped on and were packed with grease.

The only surprise was that i expected both ends to require these ball joint rubbers, but they have bushes on the lower part. They look ok but I wouldn't mind replacing them if any one knows how?

Replaced the clutch hard line last night. New part from Porsche wasn't cheap but it fitted perfectly (964-423-114-00). System bled and the clutch feels much better for it. Even bites higher.

Think I overfilled the tank as I have some fluid dripping from behind the front drivers side wheel. Anyone got a turkey baster!

So I actually can't believe its been over two years since I thought to update this thread. I'm currently midway through an engine-in seal and gasket overhaul which started as an MOT failure as the exhaust had rusted away.

Firstly to bring the thread bang up to date with the original list of issues found by 9e all that time ago.

5) Exhaust mounting bolt missing - cutting into heat shield
6) Clutch biting low and needs replacing - DONE (Slave Cylinder)
7) various oil leaks from engine - This Winters Project
8) Oil return pipe corroded and previously - Almost done!
9) fuel lines corroded - DONE
10) NSF jacking point collapsed - DONE
11) play in universal joints and one UJ boot needs replacing - DONE
12) play in front dampers
13) bodywork - DONE - Lemass glass out respray
I'm adding a few jobs to the list and will endeavour to document them here as I progress over the winter.

14) Complete Exhaust Overhaul
15) Electric Power Steering conversion
16) Lightweight engine tinware
17) Gasket, Seal and Oil return pipe refresh.

Thought I throw in a couple of pics following the rust war and respray
