Default 964 performance ignition wires

I need to change the ignition wires on my 1991 964.

To spice it up a bit I plan on using red wires. What's the best option on performance wires?

Thanks everyone in advance for your sharing your experiences!

I got ngk wires and the install was not to bad:https://rennlist.com/forums/964-foru...lug-wires.html

If I had to do it over again I would have just gotten the OEM Beru wires.

Your old wires , if they are stock wires , are copper wires .

After looking around the web the only option seems to be the Beru.

Could find a any ignition performance packages or any of the sort. Guess I'm shelling the $500 for the Berus.

FD Motorsports had them for a good deal not too long ago.

Circa $700, Pelican has them for $490 thereabouts.

You can buy a wire only kit from Pelican if you don't need to change the spark plug and dizzy boots. Much more economical.

But beware, I screwed up 5 spark plug boots while unscrewing the wires. All on the lower plugs - the ones exposed to all the exhaust heat.

Got any tips for unscrewing the old leads?

The uppers come off fairly easily. The lowers, not so much. I ended up leaving the brass screw end seized in the spark plug boot and the wire stripped bare.

Place a small flat head screw driver or 2.5mm allen key in the boot end and the wire to break the seal. Spread the boot to reveal a small opening.
Spray some armour-all or you favourite protectant in the opening to lube the area.
Keep the key/screwdriver in place while unscrewing the boot.

The wire only requires 2-3 turns before its out. You can apply a bit of pressure to pull the wire out as the seal is tight. You'll hear a reassuring "pop" as it comes out.

But the brass end can be very tight. Too much twisting and the wire strips easily.

Apply a generous amount of Vaseline on the new wire when sliding it back in the boot. You'll hear a metallic "click" to indicate the screw tip is seated. Then give it a couple of slow twists until its tight.

This method works on both the dizzy and plug ends. The dizzy end is super easy. No stripping there.

Hope that helps.

What a ridiculously complex procedure....for something that other cars accomplish with only $50 of parts and five minutes work

I cut my old wires out and unscrewed the boots on the new ones to make it easier to run. I sprayed a little Armor All on the wire to make it slick when removing and attaching the boots.

The proc to R&R the ends is pretty easy once you've done it and are used to it - and it makes running the wires MMMMUUUUUCCCCHHHHH easier. I didn't remove my A/C or any intake bits when I did mine.

I went with the NGK's which IMHO have a very slightly better wire and use exactly the same Beru ends... they actually scuffed off the 'Porsche' label on the boots, but that's the only diff. They don't come with the engine tin gaskets and some other sheaths, but if you're unscrewing them anyway this isn't that important, you can just thread them through.

$335 at Amazon and a few other places - Good luck!

Just to confirm, doing wires on this car involves basically the same level of teardown as a valve adjustment? Lower shields and engine tin need to come out which means dropping the catalytic and secondary?
