Default Help with an RS/Light Weight Type Hot Rod

Guys,

As you can see I'm a 997TT owner, but am 'jonesin' for a lightweight hot rod.
While it seems most go for the early 1980's RS Clones/Tributes, they're priced way too high, and SC's seem to be the car of choice(read overpriced) these days, so they're pricey to convert.

I've got a line on a shaky 964 for cheap. I'm willing to sink some money into it for engine rebuild, exhaust, suspension, wheels etc, but I'm trying to justify or figure if I can get it 'hot' or light enough. It's going to be mostly for street, but there may be some track days in it's future, so a half cage and some light weight seats are in the plans. I'm willing to do some light work myself, but will leave the engine, suspension and mechanicals to my trusted specialist.

So here's my question; can I make this car a killer hot rod? Can I do it with maybe $10-15k after buying? (No paint job needed: it's a driver)

Appreciate your input. Thanks in advance.

Nick

I think $10 to $15K won't really even get you well started...sadly.

Hi Nick,

KaiB offered you sound advice,........you need a bigger, more realistic budget to build up what you want with any degree of reliability.

I'd recommend a professional assessment of that "shaky" 964 to see if you can get an accurate picture of its condition before proceeding.

pay to play.

Look for a clean 964 RS america with miles.

Or you can buy that "shaky" 964 and give it the cheque book in which case i would "backdate" it into a lightweight hot rod.

There are too many factors for anyone to tell you a straight yes or no answer.
10 to 15k might give you a set of light weight seats, suspension mods a strip out and a half cage but not much more than that, so if the car in question doesn't need any other work, you will be on your way. If you need an engine top end rebuild, I believe that's going to cost around 3 to 6k, if you are looking for more power, then expect to pay at least 10k on top of that and keep on going up, the more you want to do.
Check out this thread and you will see what lengths some guys have gone to get what they want from the car, I think you will get an idea of the possible costs just by looking at the detail and effort that's been put into: https://rennlist.com/forums/964-foru...aint-soon.html
Lemass has gone through a similar process, to a different degree, and I'm just about to start a similar project too.
My plan, is to make it a better car than it is now, use it for a few months, then come the winter strip out the running gear and replace / clean that up, the following year, engine out 3.8 rs spec re-build and a full re spray, or something along these lines.
With a project like this, you just keep on spending.

Backdate? Nah, they are too cool as is. Remove weight, do motor, tranny brakes suspension. Enjoy.

I think this will cost a little more than $10,000?

Here's a lightweight @ 2,3369 lbs.

My example,
Car = $27k already has KWV3 suspension, updated brakes, semi light weight, but still a long way to go.
Engine re-mapped pushing a reported 280bhp, but unsure of this.
Estimated cost to make into a clean, oil leak free car, approx $10k
To build engine to basic, but very reliable 3.8L, same cams plus ECU tune, I've been quoted $18k.
Hope that helps a little.
