Default shifter slop

What would cause a manual tranny shifter to have slop from left to right while in gear? holds in gear well just never had a manual with left to right play in it.

Also check the black gromets that hold the shifter tube in its holder on each end. Made night and day differnce on my car. Just pull tunnel cover off and not bad to install.

My 964 had been out of commission for several months while I was getting some work done and I had been driving my Miata in the meantime which shifts very nicely. I had never really noticed the slop in my 964's shifter until I got back into the 911 after the Miata. Now I want to do what I can to make it more like the Miata (with respect to the shifting). I have been considering installing the FD Motorsports / Rothsport short shift kit and/or the "Golden Rod". I also have the side to side slop you describe when the car is in gear so I may need to replace that tube bushing as well. Please let us know how your repair goes.

Thanks,
Mike

I do not have apart number. I could be wrong and maybe it was just the grommet in the picture, but I remember a more simple round grommet. Maybe different on my 90 c2 vs c4? Maybe I am causing more confusion. My bad.

I think you might be right. There's that tube that is located by the bushes pictured above. But I have a very hazy recollection that there are some round bushes that go between the tube and the sliding part of the gearlever.

You are right, the earlier cars (or my '90 at least) had a simple round shift sleeve. (P/N 96442422401)--#26 on schematic

Ther are also 4 small white plastic bushes/sleeves on the pivot bolts holding the gear stick to the guide tube. If those are gone/bad the stick will also get sloppy. A set of four costs like 1 $. Easy to replace when you check the rest.
