I just installed some 6x9s in the back lid. They look pretty good and sound great. The fit was tight but I'm happy.

try screwing the speaker into the steel door frame and laying the floppy door card on top .. your sound will improve 500%.
I did intend to do this, however it didnt look like I'd be able to get in behind the speaker to secure it. Also the speaker grilles mount using the same screws as the speaker so not sure id be able to fix them after fitting the speaker.

From memory you use small self-tapper screws to secure the basket of the new speakers directly to the steel of the door frame, using pre-existing holes. Screw through from the front.

The grilles will then need securing to the door using a dab of resin / silicone / whatever, as the screws can no longer be used.

Not something ive done yet, just have it in my list to do.

I changed the speakers in my C4, as they had rotted away.

Details here, but basically fitted aftermarket rear speakers but used the original covers. Detail of fitting the fronts too.

Sorry for not adding it earlier. Your weird American date system made me think it was an old thread!

1. my car had predrilled holes around the opening in the steel door frame, so the process was (a) remove door card, (b) wire up speaker (c) screw speaker to door frame (d) install floppy door card over speaker (e) try to fit speaker grille to door card.

2. yes, you would definitely need a custom solution for speaker grilles as the speaker grille would need to fixed on the floppy door card.
