Default Opinions re: rear spoiler

My recently acquired 1990 C2, Gran Prix white/black, came with an aftermarket spoiler - looks sort of like the old turbo spoiler but has an extra "wing" across the top and no rubber lip. It's got to go.

I am thinking about the following options:

1. Locate a stock GP white 964 spoiler and stay original.
2. Locate (or at least try to locate) a RS America spoiler
3. Buy one of the fiberglass ducktail spoilers which, even though I tend to be a "stock" sort of guy, look pretty good on these cars, I think.

I'm interested in some opinions from the group. Any thoughts on what you would do if this was your car? Any good sources for either a stock OE spoiler or a RSA spoiler? I've already checked with the major Porsche dismantlers and no one has a GP white OE spoiler at this time and, if I go this route, would prefer not to repaint the plastic trim piece around the perimeter for fear of breakage in removal/reinstallation.

Spoilers and motor may be challenge to find used since many of us hold on to them even if we perform mods.

I have a spoiler project to put brake light into it. I located a donor spoiler and when I posted questions about taking it apart the feed back was pretty much that it is not designed for separation. Additional searches I found similar info and it made my plans a little more difficult. I may now surface mount light since it fits exactly what I was looking for. Just have to drill some holes for electrical. I plan to mask off the vents and have the plastic painted when my mods are complete.

Forgot to mention I prefer stock, with exception of that third light the ROW does not require.

Good luck.

I have a pristine OEM RSA rear spoiler in GP white that was removed when the car had 900 miles. If your interested PM me. It's a very hard piece to find as the RSA spoiler is slightly different than other OE rear spoilers.

Yes, I agree too. I've often throught about buying one, or a 3.2 spoiler for mine. All the other spoilers look much better on a wide bodied car.

Nathan:

You have a PM from me. GP white is the color I need.

Thanks,

Funny one of my cars came with the same 993 bridge wing spoiler, just didn't look right parked next to the proper RSA tail...

^^^^^ Yep, that is the spoiler (but aftermarket) I've got on my car. Not a big fan of this bridge wing and much prefer either the OE spoiler, RSA spoiler or even the aftermarket ducktail piece.

Yea they look great on the 993, 964 not so much... I'd jump on that original RSA tail the quality compared to an aftermarket is worth the cost. Make sure you have the right decklid to use the tail the RSA has a much smaller opening than the C2 due to the auto tail.

So I could not simply bolt the RSA spoiler to my stock 964 decklid and would need to get the RSA spoiler and decklid as a complete unit - correct? If so, that's a handy bit of information to have.

That is correct. Best if you can get the whole tail and deck lid. I think that's why you see these biplane wings on C2s they fit the auto tail lids.

The RSA deck though is just an earlier Carrera deck lid. So not hard to come by, the hinges needs an adapter fabricated to mount it but is pretty easy to make with a little angle. Another think to be aware of is there are two GP whites one a little bluer and one a little more yellow for the same years so don't get too upset if it doesn't match...easy to have painted.

I have several PM's for the tail but not one from the OP. I hadn't planned to sell it as it has been in my parts horde for almost 20 years. Like I said it was removed off a 1993 GP white RSA when it had 900 miles. It is flawless. Since the only made ~700 RSA's and ~ 25% were GPW, so there should be ~175 of these. But if you had an RSA you would be a fool to sell it as long term value is for a stock one.

I've kept it in the hopes that I will find a sub 25k mile GPW RSA w/ LSD only. My RSA is GR LSD only with 26k miles and I would never sell unless a twin in white came along.

It's a complete decklid and spoiler but does not come with the RS America script. All OE paint of course (way better than ever repainting one).

$2k with 1st preference to the OP and then PM's in order. If that's too $$ then back in storage it can go.
