Default Exhaust Shield Screw and Nut Substitute

Well, I started the valve adjustment on the car today, my first time. Of course the exhaust shield screw and u-nuts either stripped, broke off, or had to be dremeled off. Need to replace all of them, but not at the prices Porsche calls out for them.

Any suggestions as to substitutions for the 6x16mm hex head screw (900 075 354 00 - $4.25 each) and the u nut (999 507 073 00 - $12.75 each!!!)?

I've seen some suggestions on the forum, should I use a stainless hex head screw and washer? Would that make a difference?

Thanks,
Vin

I purchased a box of stainless steel bolts from McMaster Carr. The price is very reasonable. Box of 25 is $9.00.

I haven't found stainless u-nuts so I use steel versions from my local hardware store. They rust but are cheap and easy to replace. McMaster Carr has them too for $8.00 for a box of 25.

Thanks, that seems the best way to go.

I had the same issue in '08 or '09. I found a suitable substitute at Lowes or Home Depot. Might be able to search my old posts.

I ended up buying some Stainless Steel hardware from a company in California - Allen's Fasteners. They allow you to order single pieces rather than a box of 25 or 100. I purchased (12) S/S M6x16 Flanged Hex Head Bolts, (12) S/S M6 nuts, some M8 S/S nuts and bolts, and (20) regular steel U-nuts for $17.00 shipping included.

The Flanged Bolts were Product ID: 78600 and cost $ 0.38 each.

I finished the valve job (my first!) and remounted the valve covers, the engine tin and exhaust system will be back on by next week. Hardest part was getting the exhaust off, most of the bolts either broke or needed to be Dremeled off.

I havea local Sears Hardware nearby which has a vast amount of speciality screws, nuts and bolts. I have found a lot of hardware specific to the Porsche.

I use McMaster-Carr for a lot of fasteners. Maybe not the cheapest, but they don't sell junk and they're lightning fast.
