Default thermostat overhaul

Hi chaps,

Once the circlip is removed from the cover plate, how is the circular cover plate removed? Mine just won't budge. Not even a good combination of penetrating oil, heat and a whack against the wooden bench is shifting it!

Thanks

Rob

I anticipated this and glued a bolt to the cap in order to have somewhere to hold it from, however, in my case, it was unnecessary. The cap and alll the guts came right out as soon as I removed the clip.

Its gonna require a bit more than chewing gum :-)

I'll try the chisel and hammer approach yet to see if I can get it to rotate any. Do I have to prepare myself for a face full of spring?

I used a drill bit to drill a pilot hole and then screwed in a sheet metal screw. I then pulled on the screw. It was a struggle.

But what do you then do about the hole left in it?

Had no luck with the chisel and hammer this eve :-(

I'm replacing the entire oil system and now doubting I want to reuse the stat. There was nothing wrong with it, but given I can't get it open it doesn't bode well for. I only want to do this job ONCE!

What to do with the hole in it? I replaced the disk, snap ring & associated o-ring.

Thermostat end cap disk part number = 964-207-351-01
Snap ring 37mm x 1.5mm = 999-041-036-00
O-ring 32mm x 2.5mm = 999-701-393-40

Ok, so got round to having another attempt to remove the end plate. I ended up drilling and tapping an M10 thread so I could srew a large bolt into it for better leverage. It took a large amount of abuse before it finally broke free! It looks like it had been fitted with the aid of bearing lock. Is this necessary? I have all the new parts waiting for assembly but will wait to hear your comments.

Thanks Rob :-)

For reassembly, I just cleaned everything thoroughly, making sure all drilling/tapping debris is gone. Then I used a very large C-clamp to compress the spring so that the snap ring can be inserted. It goes together very easily.

Cleaning out all oil lines/tank/cooler. This cap won't budge. Before I drill a small hole as mentioned above, can I just flush this oil thermostat w/o removing it ?

You won't be able to flush it fully, because the valve won't be open. Remember the valve doesn't open until the proper temperature is reached. Since you have disassembled this far, I would do it all and fully disassemble. The parts cost is low.

Thanks Rob, my thinking as well. Since I don't have a parts cleaning booth, what is the proper way to clean this part, soak in a bucket of mineral spirits or just blast it w/brake cleaner ?
