964 value? Need help / feedback please
I am shopping for a clean 964 or 930. I have found one of each. The 964 is a 91 model with low mileage (32,000 miles).
I am trying to find out what a reasonable value would be for this car. It is the 2nd owner and he has had it since 1995. All of the service has been performed at the Porsche dealer in Dallas. He has not listed the car yet and is waiting on me to decide if I want to purchase before he lists it.
Specs: 1991 Carerra 2, 5 speed, 32,xxx miles White with black interior, aftermarket radio. Interior is clean and would be a 8.5 to 9 /10. No major wear. i think he even had floor mats for his floor mats. The exterior looks good also. No paint work, no accidents. It does have tinted windows that would either need to be re tinted or have the tint removed since the color of the film has started to turn.
Overall, it ills to be a well cared for example with the exceptions of the radio and the aftermarket speed line wheels. They are chrome 5 spoke that I am not exactly fond of.
The engines is dry with no appearance of leaks out of the normal moist spots.
He is asking $37,500. Yes? No? Crack head?
Not too sure what the current market is on a 964 with such low mileage.
Any comments are welcome and appreciated. I could use some feedback on this one.
Thanks

What geography are you in? The prices vary significantly. If this is the US, then I would say that's high. I would think the high 20's.
What are you plans for the car? Are you planning on driving it a lot? Do you the low miles mean something to you?

Amen. Wishful thinking on the part of the seller.
A lot of times a low miles car that has been sitting is a higher liability than one with higher miles but has been driven.
I bought my 1991 C4 with 165,000 miles ( original miles). It had only been driven about 3000 miles in the last 5 years. I have put 10,000 miles on it in 5 months! It runs better and better the more i drive it.
Look at Rocket Rob's signature - 230K miles!

That's definitely a big dollar car relative to most 964s on the market. I'd say $30-35k depending on how quick the seller wants to move it and how big of a desire the buyer has for such an example.
If you're gonna get it, I'd assume you plan on keeping it stock and keeping the miles off of it too?
If you're not gonna keep miles off of it and you're not gonna keep it stock, then you're likely going to **** away the premium you paid for it, and you'd likely be better off getting a less pristine car and using what you save on the purchase price to make it your own.

From my viewpoint, the price is much too high. The "low mileage" is way over valued. If it was a classic and it was going to be kept as a low mileage collectable/show car, then the low mileage could bring a premium.
If you look at Hagerty's Valuation Tool, a '91 Coupe that is in Condition 1, i.e. Concours condition that could win at the national level, is valued at $37,900. Condition 2, i.e. in Excellent condition, is valued at $27,900.
I think a fair price for the car in question would be $28-$30K, based on the history, service record and apparent overall condition.

With a Porsche, one always pays...whether it is "now" or "later."
If the PPI checks out, and the car was well treated and maintained, it may be worth every penny in preventing unpleasant and unexpected (i.e.$$$) "surprises."
As others have pointed out, low mileage is no guarantee of low problems...but rarely is it a minus. Things wear, and most 35K cars feel different than 135K cars.
2nd Law of Thermodynamics can be stated as : "There is no such thing as a free lunch."
I have a lot of respect for Haggerty, but they don't follow every sale, and there are outliers in price and condition that they miss.
The value of a Good, Independent PPI cannot be overstated!

My plans would be to drive the car some but not make it a daily driver. I would be replacing my Corvette with this car and it only sees 3-5k a year.
I have been looking for a 911 on and off for a few years, but I havenot found the "one".
I would drive it and possibly some track days, but it would not be a daily driver.
I will be doing a PPI on anything I buy.
Thanks to everyone for the feedback.

Honeslty- unless you plan to park it in a garage and keep it pristine and never use it - I wouldnt buy a car this old with 32k miles on it....you will pay a premium and then you will have alot of the same nudgy problems that 25 year old cars have....
I would, however, suggest that I have seen 4-5 cars go this year, on this forum and elsewhere, that have been properly maintained, have had top end or full engine rebuilds, suspension sorted, oil leaks sorted, and on and on, for prices in the mid 20's. If I were going to do it again - thats what I would be looking for - something someone else dumped a pile of time and money into, for 25-26k...
you will get a better car, with full records and you will spend alot less over time...
But - a 25 yr old 964 in mint condition as a garage queen investemnt? yeah 30-37k, if it is one, and its got all the right stuff......but whats the use if you can't play with it and drive it when you like?

I don't think I'd be too keen on tracking a low mileage street car, low miles are great for collectors, not so much for people who actually drive them.
