Hoping someone can help, my rs clone is well under way and most parts have been sourced apart from gearbox parts. Im wanting as close as I can get to rs spec as I can. Can so, e one tell me the differences between a standard g50 and the rs one, I know the synchros are steel on at least the first three gears but what else is different, ratios etc. I know the easiest way to get a close ratio box is with a 6 speed 993 c2 gearbox but this is not the way I want to go about it. Also my car has the factory lsd, is this the same as the rs? Thanks in advance, jim.
Street LSD's are 2-plate units and honestly, not good at all since they wear out rather quickly. RS cars had the Motorsports LSD which is a 4-plate one and different locking factors.
Guard LSD's are 4340 chrome-moly steel, have 4-plates on each side and are adjustable from 40/60 to 50/80. Other locking combos are also available for racing applications. This is the only way to go unless you already happen have a Motorsports one.
Thanks for the input chaps. I suppose building an accurate replica was what had made me look into rs ratios, I had also been lead to believe that the rs ratios were a good all round choice for a street/track car. I know from the few track days I have done I felt a huge gap between second and third. I had hoped that the rs had a closer 2nd 3rd and fourth!

I think you could build a closer box than the RS and be happier.
I can say I have a 1.04 fifth and have never wound it out on a track. This could happen at RA, but I wonder.

Thanks for the help, just out of interest what does your 1.04 fifth top out at? I am planning a few trips to the ring when the car is done but don't suppose I need more than 150. I think the gf would kill me before I get anywhere near that speed!

150 to 153 (tire diameter) is it with the 1.04 and my R/P, which is 3.333, a smidge taller than yours.
I'll post my ratios when I get the chance to dig them up - I LOVE my gearbox and have always recommended this as one of the first mods a guy should make.

Holy crap Kao, that thing rips! Did you replace all the gears or did you leave any alone? What sort of cost is involved with this sort of set up if you don't mind me asking? Thanks in advance!

Thanks. She's a wonderfully balanced car; a bit hairy at the edges, but she does what she's asked to do without complaint. My job is simply not to ask for the wrong thing!
First gear was retained, all else is Guard steel, syncros and all. Not inexpensive and you want a top-line guy to set it up.
I agree, building a replica gearbox isn't the best way to go if you want to spend your money on the gearbox. At least if your purpose is to get a gearbox that works well on track. If your main target is to build a replica it's another ball game. Bu a replica gearbox won't add much value when you sell the car. It's still not the correct RS-tranny.
