Default Street legal 964RS in the US??

Guys,

just for my curiosity.

To my knowledge the genuine 964RS has never been street legal in the US (due to pedestrian protection issues, I guess).
Will this legal situation be maintained or is there something like an option to import and legalize the RS e.g. if the cars reach a certain age?

Thanks

Stefan

First obvious hurdle is the airbag (or lack of it), then the manual windows.
That said, I think there is one blue RS registered in the USA.

I happened to get lucky and park right next to one at a local cars & coffee! This one had already been "federalized" before this owner purchased the car.

Like a lot of things...it looks like you can bring anything over and occasionally drive it on the road (if you have enough $$).

The manual windows itself are not a problem, hower the US required knee bolster would be in the way of the window crank.

from RSAmerican.net (assuming this is one of the hurdles you could face importing an RS?)
http://www.rsamerica.net/whatis.htm

In order to meet type certification requirements in 1993 RS America came with electric windows (the two rocker switches on the drivers door are visible top right of the panel pictured). The significantly lighter manually cranked windows were not used because the car would need to be re-certified in this configuration which would involve embarking on an expensive and time consuming crash test campaign.

Want an RS? - Petition started to change gray market exemption from 25 to 15 years
From Autoblog.com:

A group of enthusiasts have started a We The People petition urging the Executive Branch in Washington to stop using what it says are Homeland Security funds to police gray-market vehicles. The petition also seeks to have the federal gray market exemption age reduced from 25 years old to 15 years old. As of right now, any vehicle imported into the U.S. must be able to comply with our government's safety and emissions standards unless they are 25 years old or older, making it nearly impossible for the importation of newer vehicles on an individual basis....

OK - so that means that starting with an age of 25 an import and the registration is not an issue otherwise you would need an successful petition and the respective special approval by the authorities.

So in 4 years we can import an RS.

Not going to lie, seeing what they go for, and adding in the costs to bring it over, why would you do this other than collector value? Isn't a US Cup basically an RS, and already street legal here? Is the price difference that great that its worth the hassle of bringing it over?

I think Udo posted up an RS in England going for 70k pounds recently...thats $110k...I do love my 964, but there's no way...!

I've checked his website but didn't see any maritime blue listed. Is still for sale or was snapped before listed? I was curious to know how much he was asking for.

Me too.

Yeah, the US Cup cars are pretty similar, but of course with the regulatory bits - airbags, glass. Aren't they a lot cheaper?

Well I've made the cup vs RS aurgument for at least 5 years. You can Import a 964 RS and pay a lot of money to federalize it, which essentially means turning it into a US CC. The key difference between the cars is US cups don't have a RS serial #, instead they have a US Vin #, as that was only way to legally import cars. Only time will tell if that will be an issue from a collectability standpoint. Nice 964's have increased in value, RSA's have gotten pretty spendy, I think the US cups are still a very good buy. Esentially a 964 RS mechanical spec car, that is US street legal even is race trim, 45 built.

I was asking because the prices for genuine RS here in Germany are actually going through the roof. What (in terms of market and price development) will happen if there are legal possibilities in the US and the one or other collector or enthusiast will show up in Europe - we will see.

I guess I will keep mine

gonna be 6 figures, of some sort. according to Alex.
the cars are on their way.
Alex makes sure cars are basically perfect before he markets them.
He is a great guy to deal with, and honest as the day is long.

I would be surprised if this RS does not end up in Germany, where it originated from.
