Angry Ebay engine mounts - A word of warning!

Well today my new non droopy engine mounts arrived from the US. Getting them out of the box, and everything looked fine.

I dropped them both in first and gently nipped up before torquing anything up.
Here are my original ones removed - Not in good shape!

With the engine still supported from beneath, I set about torquing the large M12 nut to 85NM. The first was tightened without issue, the 2nd got to about 60NM before the torque suddenly dropped off. WTF !!! I removed the nut to find the stud had pulled through the thread in the base of the mount

Seriously pi$$ed at this! If the mount had failed like this whilst the engine was running or worse the car was moving - the consequences would be catastrophic! Looking more closely the metal in this area appears to be a poor grade soft casting. I've now lost total confidence in these parts, including the one that fitted correctly. I just don't think I can trust them now. I've contacted the ebay seller (a well know company) to see what their response is. Frankly, I'd rather a full refund rather than replacements. I'd rather pay more from a UK supplier.

What you described actually did happen to one of our members not too long ago as a result of using those same eBay motor mounts.

Cheap **** can turn out to be very expensive.

If the supplier is whom I think, they are made in India.

Ok chaps, so what are my options from here?

I need to get two new mounts and would prefer something a little firmer.
The thread Vandit posted referred to 3 options - 993 mounts>Wevo>RS
I recall from reading other threads tho that fitting too hard a mount can result in issues with the engine carrier failing? Really don't want to make another mistake here. Will the wevo ones be fine with the stock engine carrier? Has anybody owned them long enough to verify their suitability and longevity?
You guidance on any of the above or other mounts would be appreciated.

Thanks
Rob

Rob, those are copies of 993 C4 mounts and as you've found out are well dodgy! Pukka 993 C4 mounts can be bought from Porsche for around £200 a pair (about half the price of original 964 engine mounts).

p.s. Avoid ebay for 'new' 964 parts.

Hi boxsey, that sounds pretty fair. Who do you order your parts through? If you have a contact number for an OPC you have in mind, I'll get them ordered pronto.

Thanks

- Incidentally, the spec of your car is *exactly* what I'm aiming for :-)

yeah those are junk.

Get an OEM 993 or 964 mount.

The 993 mount is a solid rubber and a bit more firm than the expensive hydrolic 964 mount.

I think it kind of depends on your driving habits if you need to reinforce the engine craddle or not with the Wevo, it probably depends also on the condition of it. I have seen a lot of bent ones. Not sure if that is related to the stock mount failing or something else.

I went with the 993 mounts from my local Porsche dealer, no complaints and pretty cheap.

I thought the OE (Freudenberg/Corteco) 993 mounts were hydraulic and the knock-offs were not?

wevo here for 3 or 4 years.. No issues with the carrier.
You can't go wrong with the wevo.

Yeah, no, the Corteco 993 are solid rubber. Some 964 mounts, like for the C4/Cab, are the $400 ea hydrolic mounts

only some people have reported when pushed hard they will start to develope cracks and potentially will fail with hard enough mounts. Its not a global problem but something to beware of

Just get in touch with your most local Porsche centre. The price will be the same whichever one you use. They will usually give you 10% discount if you ask. It usually takes them a couple of days to get them.

You can also buy the 993 C4 mounts from places like Type911 for the same price:

993 engine mounts

As eluded to by Makmov, the wevo or RS mounts are fine for normal use. However if you're going to track the car and start bouncing over kerbs, it's best to have a brace fitted to the engine carrier because of the extra stress.

I have the RS mounts and love them. I put a set of new 964 C2 mounts on but then decided to upgrade to the RS items after a year. The 964 mounts are now back in their boxes in the loft.
