C4 Shifting problem all of a sudden...no reverse/5th
#31
I should have searched more before running up my post count on this thread.
I was quoted over 200.00 with shipping for #16 & #15 from Sunset. Based on this I decided to search more on this topic. I found a thread on replacing the white plastic bushings only. Porsche does not supply this bushing separate from the ends. Someone discovered that a 928 clutch bushing is the same (928-116-145-03 $15.00).
I also ordered the shift tube sleeve (2) for the pre 91YM (964-424-224-01).
It appears the no reverse/5th gear thing is common. I should have read further on my search page.
Thanks for all of the input

This is the fix! For others who reference this thread, as mentioned by Vegas993, lift upward on your shifter and if there is movement, your shift sleeve bushings are shot. One bushing was gone and the other was cracked. After the repair solid as a rock and no movement.
Also, i ordered #15 & #16 bushings only (928 part number listed in my previous post). Both were shot. Still in place with some play but did not have much life remaining. Thanks Rob!
Thanks guys!

No reverse/5th update
Hello everyone, a few months ago I wrote in about the no reverse or 5th gear problem. My car has been sitting all summer, still cannot find the issue. The linkage system is all ok. Is pristine shape actually. Th only thing I have found out of ordinary was some fluid liking out of the seal into the gearbox. After waiting on local repair shops for an appointment no one seems to have any idea exactly what it is. The dealer says they wil pull out the transmission and engine and take it apart Just let me know for around 2,000 usd. I'd like to know if any one here knows of any good 964 mechanics that may have another option anywhere in the us that I could contact. If not has anyone taking out a full drivetrain before? Like to know what I'm getting into. Thanks

Removing the engine/tranny assembly is not difficult. I've done it multiple times. It does require some planning and a few special tools like an ATV jack, if you want to try it yourself. There is a good write up of the process here. While you have a C2, its a bit simpler than what Garrett describes. His car is a C4.
If you disconnect the shift linkage and attach a long M8 bolt to the shift rod going into the tranny, can you access all gears? If yes, then the problem is somewhere in your shift linkage. If not, then the problem is inside the tranny. Maybe I missed it above, did you try draining the tranny to see if the fluid looks normal and no debris is present?

Thanks, that info you sent sounds quite valuable, any chance you can elaborate on that test you sound with the m8? Also my car is a C4. And the Trans fluid I will check. I'd like to figure out what it is that wrong that make a decision on how or who is fixing it. Thanks again!

When you have the shift linkage disconnected, there is an open threaded hole at the end of the shift rod sticking out of the tranny. Thread in a long M8 bolt (~3 inches) and see if you can shift the tranny into every gear. With the engine off, of course. The length of the bolt is just to give your hand something to grab onto. This test eliminates any problems with the shift linkage as possible causes of problem shifting. If you can't get into gear then the problem is inside the tranny. If you can, then the problem is with the shift linkage.

Round 2...Gear Box...?
Well its been one year since my car has been "up on blocks"... I couldn't resist and I took it around the block the other day... motor fired right up as always, HOWEVER, STILL NO REVERSE/5TH GEAR since I have not pulled trans yet..
I am determined to fix the transmission issue now. This is my current idea.....
1. Follow the write up, and take out the engine/trans/gearbox. then plan transmission/gearbox on pallet and ship to a professional rebuilder in the US. Does anyone recommend a C4 Trans expert?
Are there any New gearboxes available from any supplier or will someone be able to rebuild mine?
also is there any way of diagnosing weather its transmission or gear box or are they related to each there as far as parts..? thanks again
