Bump

Ducaporsche, was it your shift rod?

I have the same issue. I can't get my car in reverse (1-4 are fine). My shifter feels sloppy. It feels like the problem is within the shifter itself. Is there a bushing that fails under the boot? I remember a thread talking about a plastic cup type bushing that fails but can't find the thread. I think it is #16 on the picture crg53 posted.

Thanks!
Jim

There are two cup bushings. They are #15 & #16 on the parts diagram. I had to replace both on my. The cup under my shifter had disintegrated.

My car has been parked in garage for about the last 5 months. sadly no not fixed. I had taken apart the entire linkage system everything was in pristine order. I found some leakage coming out of the boot seal at the rear most end where the shaft connects into the gear box. from what mechanics ive talked to looks like the gear box needs pulled which means an entire engine trans removal and abut 3-7k $ worth of labor and parts. I hope not but I really have to idea at this point..... Frank

Yes, I replaced them. Its very is easy. You jack the car up, remove the center panel under the car. The front ball/cup is visible. The one under the stick shift is hidden by the rubber boot. If you pull it back, you can access it. I used a pry bar to separate the cup from the ball. Any lubrication was long gone and my cup plastic material was crumbling. Installing is easy too. Be sure to lubricate the cup with lithium grease before installing. I used a pair of right angle channel lock pliers to "snap" the cup back onto the ball.

Frank,
It does not seem like a gear box issue on mine. I compared my shifter to a friends 964 and my shifter feels different (sloppy) and that is before any gears are engaged on the trans. I will have my car on the lift next week. When I get a good look at things I will post my findings. I would hold off on the trans removal until I report

I will add this. If I really push hard to the left, actually moving my console a bit, I can get it in reverse. I struggle with 5th as well. When in gear everything operates as it should. Without the extra effort when I shift into reverse I find first gear.

thats how mine felt the night it broke while driving as i forced it over to 1st something spun and snapped in gearing. now reverse and 5th are blocked out as if there is no way to even force it over its like the gears never existed. thats why Im thinking mine may be in the syncros or soemthing.

You mentioned that you checked all of the linkage. Did you check the plastic cup bushings 15 & 16? That is where I am leaning based on my dramatic and sudden alignment issue. I have had bad syncros on previous cars and it was always accompanied by a grind when entering the gear. I don't have this.

I had a similar experience, mine was the shift sleeve, part 26 in the diagram. They tend to fall apart after excessive wear. Can you grab the **** and lift the shifter up straight so the boot gets tight? If so, then that's your fix. Cost is about $11 on Pelican.

I agree that this doesn't sound like a syncro problem.
