That's it Rob - bought the closed cell foam today - 5kgs for 2 964s worth ...
Got 6,9,18mm thickness so I can try double it in places ie firewall ... Density of 45

Only issue is making sure the glue is upto the task re the aluminum, but it went on with little grooves and folds so lots to purchase on

Sounds just about right Paul... I'll be back to that side of the equation in a week or two I hope

On it thanks Zinga!

Here's my ground control to major Tom moment!
Idle DBs down from 78 to 72 ...
As the scale is geometric that's quite a lot ...
But the foil is mainly there to kill reverb and vibration...
Will be very happy if I get back or close to stock noise levels ie post cat delete and free flows ...
quieter than that and I'll get the wife and little one to come for long trips more often

Thanks for all the encouragement and kind words all

HiWind, good to see you're having a lot of fun with your 964.

BTW, looks like I might be in your neck of the woods in two weeks, racing at Killarney...

Nothing of the sort. I'm bringing down a lowly 74RS I bought recently and will probably be slumming with a friend who has a garage on the outside of Malmesbury corner. Just racing for fun this time.

You racing your GT3 in Extreme?

A '74 RS 3.0? Or is it a '74 Carrera with the RS-spec MFI engine? Either way that's a serious piece of kit. Pics please! (Sorry HiWind for the detour)

Did you source locally or eBay? Some I've seen is adhesive backed which provided the adhesive is good may be preferable since you'll use less spray adhesive.

Does the foam provide anything quantifiable in the way of sound proofing? Or is that all down to the left over wall paper from the mir space station

No-no, it's not the real thing, it's just a clone, a 980kg light-weight 250hp 3L with some other trick bits. A fun little car and it's not even close to correct, but I intend making it right. I'll post two pics...

(Sorry HiWind)

Robt: I got it from the manufacturer and decided to go with non adhesive backed as I want to use something I know will stick. Aviation glue allows you to slide and reposition for the first minute or 2 so I figured that would help get the foam seated/worked/wedged in best.

The foam IS the main sound deadener from what I've read, with the bitumen-foil being there to lower reverb and transmission of rattles etc.. Effectively lowering the 'tininess' of the body. Per 80/20 rule you don't need to cover entire surface, just strips on 50-60% of the surface to achieve most of the density gain ... But it's more spaceship this way

KenD, Pierre: go ahead, perfect car - white, Carrera stripe, modeled on RS, M&R built engine ... Pierre's thread could have the same title as this one but w/o the 964 Pierre do you have a pic with yr 964 side by side the new one? Ps pm sent.

Pierre,

That's beautiful

I love the air-filter assemblies/hats, did you make them yourself? If not what are they please? They look seriously cool

Cheers,
Paul

Thanks for the details Pierre - she sounds like a lot of fun. Those are a big set of carbs for a 3-litre!

There are 3 ways to look at this:
1. either I'm not going to have any of cell fon reception in the car, or
2. Houston, I'm ready for count down
3. I have Disco fever!

Foam & Carpet begins today.
Also will get a decibel reading at 2k revs - was 79 then 75, now ??? and then some open road tests too.

Now I shd add that the audio guys don't believe in covering everything with the bitumyl/foil products.
http://www.sounddeadenershowdown.com/ ... talking their own book to a degree

I figured that I'd use what I had bought and budget 5kg of new material - which is what I have here with a bit left over.
The science is that you can dampen reverb and vibration this way but you cannot barrier noise.
I was surprised by the (app store) decibel readings ... but they did drop and egine tone was noticeably less "airy"/windy.
But Mass Loaded Vinyl (MLV), while effective and Rolls Roycey is very heavy .. so for now I'm going with Velcro/Glue mounted closed cell foam.
