Default From a 964 to a 944 Turbo

Anyone done that before?

Before anyone jumps on me, I'm intrigued by the challenge of buying a banger, doing it up mechnically and cosmetically, then selling it when the right buyer comes along for a tidy profit. Brings me alot of pleasure restoring a car.

Did that to the 964, to the level than some of the guys thought it was one of the best 964s here.

I still love the 964, and will be back.

I went from a 944 Turbo (early 220bhp version) to a 964.

The 944T was very practical (e.g. 2 small kids bikes and a picnic for the family in the boot), benign handling, comfortable on standard suspension (soaked up the journey to Le Mans effortlessly) and fun power delivery for a toy car. The old-school on/off nature of the turbo is grin-inducing when you are driving for fun but a bit wearing if you are using the car as a daily.

They are not cheap to run though. Mine cost me almost £2k a year and that was just keeping it on the road.

Rusty sills are a big issue (cheap to fix temporarily, expensive to fix properly), belt changes are a £500 job (although it sounds like you will be doing a lot of work yourself) and my local specialist wouldn't quote for replacing the clutch as it can be such a big job, £1k+, as you have to remove so much stuff to get to it and it can be a bitch of a job. Other jobs are probably no harder than any other car but with the Turbo there is a bit more to go wrong than on an NA 944.

As SML said, even if you do all the work yourself and cost your time at zero, I doubt you'd make a profit unless there is some kind of bizarrely boyant market for 944s in Singapore.

I would use your 964 skills and find a cheap 911 to do up.

Well, a 944 Turbo banger is half the price of a 964 banger. The question is whether it has any upside when I try to sell it

964 is likely to be more costly to run than any 944, turbos included

My S2 was a lot cheaper to look after than my 964 and I used it every day to commute

They are fantastic cars, even more so looking at the prices

Have fun with the 944T but I would have kept the 964.

why not get an S2 or 968? similar or more power and better reliability.

i think 944t has a bad rep similar to 928. that's one of the reasons the resale is far less than what these cars are worth. an e30 M3 is worth about 2x of a similar vintage 944 but cost less when new.

Simply cuz such cars are rare in SG, and there are currently 2 944Ts for sale, one manual and one tip.

They've been on sale for some time, and just itching for a project.

944s don't have a bad reputation. They simply suffer from being very successful when new i.e. they sold in large numbers a la Boxster/996. Hence, prices are now very low and they have fallen into the bad territory of owners who can't really afford to run or aren't willing to spend the money running what was an expensive car when new. There is nothing inherently wrong with any of the range, and the Turbo is a quite superb machine. Any bad rep. that Turbos may have comes from owners trying to get more power from snall investments; usually ends with blown head gaskets etc. .
