Default Brake backing plates C2 vs RS

Try as I might I can't locate a thread I've read on here about the difference between the two. A niggling memory says that they are interchangeable though the RS ones have better ventilation??

I ask because I'm getting bored with trying to patch mine up and figure I should just give up and replace them. I harbour a secret desire to upgrade to RS brakes at some point in the future so wonder whether I can start this by "upgrading" to RS backing plates? Alternatively, I'd like to install some non water-soluble non lead-impregnated aftermarket improvements. I'll bet that Humpty Dumpty has bespoke carbon-fibre jobbies.

Can anyone help?

The RS are lighter and bigger than stock C2/4, ~4oz each vs ~8oz ea

they are bigger because the RS rotors are bigger 322 vs 298mm

turbo are bigger and heavier than stock ones

Rumour has it that braking in the wet (normal road driving) is adversely affected. Is this just myth?

Diameter doesn't sound like a problem. I know that the RS uses a different upright though; do you know if the mounting points are compatible?

Many thanks both!

I havent done that many miles since I took mine off, but I have driven in torrential rain and it didnt appear to have any impact at all, good or bad

That's reassuring Freedman. Makes me wonder why they're there at all?

mounting points are the same for all 964/993 the lightest is the 993.351.803(4).80 parts on the left unless you use the 2 part aluminum 964Cup part at the bottom, the Cup part is NLA

Thanks Bill! Sounds like the best plan is to leave them off until I work out a need for them and buy a pair of those 993 ones. Are they stamped steel rust incubators too or does the silver colour suggest something more appropriate?

I have had mine of for DE's in the rain at Thunderhill. Braking was not an issue. The problem was traction.

To help prevent gravel & rocks & stuff from getting between the rotor and the caliper? If you were to drive a 964 in the rain, with and without, back-to-back you will notice a slight delay in braking (the best way to describe it might be; there is a miniscule but noticeable delay before the brakes "bite" during a downpour).

The Cup ones are aluminum

I didn't put a magnet on mine, they may be al. certainly they are 1/2 the weight of the standard 993 ones.

My concern was w/ heat at the sensors, this is a concern mostly for tracked cars, I did run w/o them for 5 yrs w/o issue

RSR used cut up stock ones

the upper 1/2 for 964Cup, these are al. and are feather light

the upper pair are exact dupes of 993RSR uppers, they are cut down stock rears(bottom)

weights

+964 You might hear stones pinging off your discs - I've had no issues.
