Default 1992 C4 ABS frustration

Hi All,

I have a 1992 Porsche 911 C4. The car has been in the shop for a while now apparently waiting on a part. They said the ABS Control Module is shot and they are having problems finding a used one.. buying brand new from Germany is very costly so I'd like to avoid that. Does anyone happen to have one to sell or can someone point me in the right direction towards finding one?

The part number is 96461812600 but I think 96461812601 works with it to?

Any help would be much appreciated!

Thanks,
Dan

I had an ABS issue with my C4, it turned out to be the relays that are on the ABS pump. They were cleaned, re-installed and the problem never came back.

What indications are you having with the ABS system?

The ABS basically just stopped working. The red brakes light is illuminated in the dash as well. Interestingly though, sometime the breaks would 'appear' out of no where and then stop working again. Maybe that suggests there is still hope? The mechanic said it was water damage.

Can't help with a 2nd hand one Dan but I had the exact same issue on a 1990 C4 many years ago. Leaking rubber seals on the hood let moisture in and drips onto the control unit resulting in rusted pins. I tracked a 2nd hand unit down from a guy in Romford at about half the cost of a new one and avoided having to sell the first born... If you have water damage then make sure you fix the source of that at the same time.

Hmm.. Mind if I ask what you paid? Trying to get a ballpark range for what these things cost.

Thanks

Wohaa Is that what I'm looking at? My mechanic told me a couple hundred used.

9 years ago so probably not a good comparison! About GBP300 I think. But a looong time ago so not 100%.

I have said it before, I will say it again:

RELOCATE THE ABS BRAIN!!!!

The problem with the ABS brain as it is is that any water that gets on the wiring bundle will make its way *into* the ABS connector because of gravity and capillarity. That issue has destroyed many an ABS module in wetter climates.
See here:
https://rennlist.com/forums/964-foru...-cleaning.html
By relocating it heads-down on the front wall of the trunk, any water that gets into teh wiring will not be allowed to "climb" its way into the connector.

Dan,

I searched casually for one for a couple of years for my late model year 91, but could not find one for under $1000. Mine got wet at some point before I owned it. I pulled the unit apart but it was a totally corroded. I think the early units (<91.5) end in serial number 00, later years end in 01. I remember reading in Adrian Streather's book that you can put an 01 in a 00, but not the other way around. I don't know if this is fact or not.

Great advice to relocate the control unit!

Good luck with your search.

One on UK eBay by respected Porsche Indy @ GBP499

I would think worldwide shipping by them is not a problem nor would advice.

Not sure if this is also one:

I'm going through this on my '91 C4. The ABS brain was finished (nearly all the pins were gone) as was the plug on the harness. I found a used '00 unit for $225 on the forums a few weeks ago, and a front harness on Ebay for $75. It's not fixed yet, but I have no reason to believe it won't be fixed by replacing those parts.

My understanding is that the 01 partnumber is needed when the speed input is through the ABS unit rather than from the sending unit on the transmission. I "think" that the change occurred mid-91.

njansenv, sounds like you lucked out... that's exactly what I'm looking for and what I'm hoping to spend on it. Did you create a post looking for it or did you stumble across a post w/it listed?

Thanks for everyones replies too!.. You folks know your Porsches
