Shrek is stuck in my garage with a badly leaking front diff input shaft seal.
While waiting for a spot in the workshop to change that seal, I am tackling a myriad small details.
One satifying, if not spectacular step was cleaning the font compartment. I removed copious amounts of dust and dirt, changed a lot of rusty fasteners with SS steel ones, re-positionned the ABS brain, and repainted the positive cable cover on the bottom. I also fitted new water outlets rubber valves.
The spare was never used and only needed a clean. The jack is A-OK as well.
The tool roll..Rusted tools, missing pieces, seized snap fasteners. Still working on that one.
It is however satisfying that one can now work in that trunk without getting filthy, and that rust is all gone and never was structural.
I am in the process of cleaning my front trunk before putting everything back together on my car. Just wondering the benefit of moving the ABS brain. Also was it fairly easy.
Re-lodging the ABS brain is motivated by the few cases I have seen where water followed the wiring loom from the right front fender well into the trunk and ended up pooled in the connector, leading to rust and destruction of the brain. Relocating it on the front trunk wall allows me to put it upside down, and the connector is no longer the lowest point in the loom. I drilled 2 holes in the trunk wall for 2 threaded rivets.
As for the amount of dirt, the car was a daily driver for 140K miles to a person that likely never even lifted the trunk carpet, and parked it outside. Add a few missing water grommets, and a 6 year stay in a field under a tarp, and presto! Tons of dirt everywhere.
I had to replace the battery on Sunday and when lifting the spare wheel in and out I looked at the position of the ABS brain and thought there were safer places for it. Another job to add to the list.
