Depends what you are looking for... for me the best sound was when I had the following:

G-Pipe (secondary muffler bypass) + Cat bypass

I then went with the full Fabspeed system (headers, etc.) and still think that the previous setup I had sounded better...

What makes them crack? Inadequate support of the cup pipe?

No, it has nothing to do with the way its supported, but more with exhaust gas flow hitting the secondary harder and creating vibration that causes cracking near the upper / lower part seam othe side of secondary muffler (at least that is what I thought as the cracks appeared in both mufflers in pretty much the same areas... and yes I drive her pretty hard ).

Just for the record, I'm another victim of a split secondary from using a cup pipe.

I remember reading (on the internet so it must be true) that the later secondary boxes were revised and are stronger.

I got a later secondary box on e-bay from an 93 car the PET code ends in 07 and has 93 stamped after the part number. so far all's good.

I also have a split secondary box. Has anyone any experience with the Dansk replacements? I may try to have mine welded but failing that I'll need to put my hand in my pocket so I should investigate all options.

Just as a data point here, from the non-split secondary camp:

I have put approximately 20,000km on the car with the cat and primary bypassed, and about ~10,000km before that with just the primary bypassed. Secondary appears to be holding up fine.

My secondary is definitely an early one, too - the car is an 89, and if I recall correctly the secondary is stamped as being manufactured in 88... pre 90, anyway.

Obviously YMMV, but this thread implies that split secondaries are rather common and I'm not sure that is the case.

Same with mine. It's a 90 and I have put 16k on it without any issues.

Me too. Mine's a 93 and had the cup pipe for the past 40,000km, and no split (hope I didn't just jinx myself)
