Default Engine Rebuild... ahhhh

Well after a fairly long planning and rebuild I got the results today . Just too excited not to share. Should feel like an air cooled GT3 I hope. Car should be back together soon now. Not sure I'll sleep well until it is

Default Details

Where to start....

I bought the car to be my daily driver . I bought it knowing it had 2 broken headstuds and needed a rebuild. It had some pretty nice upgrades already including JIC suspension, assorted Rennline parts, cutoff switch. The car had been tracked before. My original plan was a sensible build for a fun daily so I was in a 911 most days and not just on track weekends.

Talking with my friends I later decided.. it should be a daily / track car to relieve my poor 74 Carerra that runs in Stock E PCA. I instruct with PCA and I'm out on track 15-20 weekends/year either in DE or races. My poor race car was just getting beat up and it was never in prime condition for race weekends.

Since my race car is bound by stock rules (no engine mods) I thought it made sense to go nuts on my other fun car. Sensible build.. out the window.. and down the slippery slope . I started the build wanting 360+ HP on pump gas (93 octane here in TX). After lots of reading on the forum (been lurking for a long while now) and talking to some expert builders I decided to go down the Motec route. I was on the fence about ITBs but later caved. We did the basic build hell for stout because the car was going to see a lot of track time.

We put the motor together with all the bits listed below and the stock heads. We had the heads ported and got the dyno results shown above in dotted lines. Now 340 was a good result but I'm pretty much a moron and decided I couldn't live without the 360+ target I started with so... we ordered a custom set of heads. The solid line dyno is from the same motor with the new custom heads.. 381 hp.

Engine Parts

GT3 Crank
GT3 Oil Pump
Carillo rods
993 RSR headstuds
3.8 Mahle Slip in Pistons / Cylinders
Custom Head (Gamroth)
CAM - William Knight / Gamroth profile
Gamroth ITBs
GT3 Plenum
Motec M84
Gamroth Headers
Gamroth Cup Exhaust

While I was at it.. i thought it would be fun to put in a 993 gearbox with a short gear set. I found a 1995 993 gear box and we changed out 2,3,4 and 5 with GT gears. We moved the stock 5th gear to 6. We added steel syncros and a Guard race LSD.

Add to that the Gamroth goldenrod short shift kit and a trick new clutch package that's somewhere between the RS version and a full race clutch.

The car has no AC, no heat and we just added a 2nd oil cooler (did I mention I live in Texas?). I dress up for work but I've figured out that in the mornings even in summertime it's cool enough to drive without getting all sweaty. Now on the way home in the dead of summer with no AC.. I do sweat JUST a bit but don't really care so much somehow .

I did the project in two stages. The original build, transmission work and assembly was done in Sealy TX by Rennsport. Stage II was done by William Knight and Jeff Gamroth. We shipped the motor out to Portland to Jeff Gamroth at Rothsport where the Motec, ITBs, plenum, CAMs, new heads were added and the final tune was done. I have to say that Jeff has been really great to work with from start to finish. The motor is heading back to Sealy tomorrow.

Next I've got a Heigo half cage with harness bar going in. I need to find some good seats (suggestions anyone??). I'll add Schroth harnesses as well. I've also got the stock brake package still so I'm planning on changing the front suspension out for 993 parts and going with the big red brake upgrade. I also need another set of wheels for my track tires. At some point I may change the shocks out for the Moton Club Sports or KWs... any feedback on either??

Special thanks to Jeff Gamroth, Mike Callas, Steve Weiner and William Knight for all the help. Also thanks to Rennlist! I read this forum every night without fail. I've lurked a lot and have learned a TON.

More photos of the motor and a shot of the same exhaust on a different car.

Lovely, that will keep the GT3's honest. I was looking at a similar engine in an imported RS America racer at my Indy yesterday, also built by Rothsport I think, it sounded absolutely incredible. What noise limits do you have at tracks stateside?
