pretty sure there is a brass type cover to a bleed nipple somehwere on the fuel rail - remove the brass cover and press the ball bearing with a rag until it only hisses fuel

Taken the car out for a blat this evening, nice and hot, no strange noises! I guess it was just something to do with running low on fuel.

Was it raining or had you just washed the car, water can pool in the little hollow near where the chain housing meets the case and as it boils off when the engine is very hot it could give the noise you heard.

Funny you should say that, the car had been out of the garage overnight and got rained on just prior to the event. I did notice a fair amount of water in the area of the chain cases. Not sure that would have been enough water given the volume and duration of the bubbling, but its definitely a possibility.
