Default Oil cooler question

So Unfortunatly, after cleaning up the rather dirty oil cooler and it pipes, to see where the leak was coming from, I set to it over the weekend to hopefully find the pipe connections weeping.... No such luck. Dry as a bone up there, but dampness on the cooler :-(
So, my question, and I can't find the answer through the search function! Once I've got the unit off, and the new one back on... Do I have to fill the cooler first before I connect it, or is it always empty when it's not being used? Just wondering so I can get it right - and not end up with a load of air stuck somewhere?!?

Can someone help?
Cheers.

I've not done the job on the 964 but I have always pre filled the oil cooler when I've fitted oil coolers on othe cars.

I also rinse out the cooler before fitting (even new ones) with whatever organic solvent I have to hand (thinners, brake cleaner, petrol etc). If anything meaningful comes out, a proper clean at a radiator specialist may be called for.

The oil from the cooler will not be filtered before entering the engine, and you'd be surprise how much junk can get in there.

It is worth checking the alloy crush washer that sits behind the temp sensor. They corrode over time, mine was leaking but looked at first like the rad itself. With the front PU removed I cleaned all the oil off the rad with gunk then ran the car up to temp so I could see where the leak was coming from.

Thanks for the tips guys!

Can anyone tell me the tool size I'm going to need to remove the oil lines from the cooler? Trying to find a large spanner set to buy, but not having much luck.

Cheers.

Not sure but probably a 36mm 32mm and maybe a 30mm. I got my 36mm crowsfoot from ebay, 32mm combination spanner from halfords, and a cheap 30mm (looks exactly like the ones in the set you can get from pelican) from Cromwell Tools (who are my new faves).

A bit pricy, but FVD De. has a nice set of proper oil line "spanners".
