New Here... Thoughts on a 964
Hey everyone,
I'm new to the forum and have been doing a lot of reading about different porsches and have decided I want one.
I took a look at a 91' 911 cabriolet today... black on tan interior.. with 75000 miles on it.
The car has a realllly good service history. Clutch was replaced at 68000. The car's at a dealer with really good reviews and the salesman was taking notes of any minor details he would want taken care of before I bought the car. (plastic interior bits being loose, slight oil smell coming from the engine after the drive, steering wheel alignment).
Over all I loved the drive and love the car. It's $27000 +tax. (in canadian)
To me it seems like an average price for a clean 964 but I'd like to get more opinions. Also if there's important questions I should ask or a thread that goes over this I'd appreciate it.
Thanks a lot and I look forward to posting on here.

That's before negotiating. One thing he mentioned was that he wants to make sure absolutely everything is looked after before he sold it to me which was nice. And as I said he/ the dealer has a good reputation.

Get a PPI
Price seems to be high for a cab, unless it is in pristine condition.
If it smell burnt oil it probably has some oil leaks that need to be fixed.
What about the maintenance history? Any other receipts besides the clutch job?
Any mods or is a stock car?
Make sure you get a PPI done from a reputable shop to know if any other issues with the car.
If this is the first 964 you are looking at I would suggest you to take your time checking other 964's to get a fell of different cars and their conditions. It might take a while until you find the right car (it took me one year!)
Check out this tread on what to look for when buying a 964 and what your PPI should cover.

Good luck with your search and keep us posted

If the car you are looking at is a '91, it better be a late '91, go in and check forums etc..to see the engine #s that have top end issues (mostly) resolved..."oil leaks" can have a larger meaning for pre-mid-91...I think engines after #62M06836 have iproved top ends..

Will this fear ever go away???

There's more to the maintenance history... plugs and wires were replaced.. he kept records of brakes services and oil changes. Looking at it, it seemed like it was in 9.5/10 condition. Very well taken care of.
The only mod was suspension to lower it a bit and I think 993 brakes in the rear.
He is putting the car into the shop to look after the oil smell issue and let me know what it is.
I'm located in toronto... a bit far from ottawa. I appreciate the offer 92C2Targa#119!
I'll ask him about the engine # too.
Now when you guys are mentioning to do a PPI, this is at a porsche dealer. Would it still be beneficial or is putting it through their shop sufficient?
Thanks a lot again!

PPI is king. Looking for engine numbers and passing on a car is just silly...
