Anyone install 993 coils in 964? Pics?

I was wondering if anyone has eny experience installing the 993 coil set in a 964 and what challenges it presented. Anyone have any pictures of it installed? I assume they use the same 964 coil wires. I am thinking of settling this coil issue once and for all and just buy a 993 coil set. Thoughts? I am just as tired of posting about coils, as most of you people are about reading them! Haha.

g60pops 09-07-2012 03:00 AM

the 993 coil wires are shorter as the coils are mounted near the rear lights as far as i know

RicardoD 09-07-2012 03:25 AM

I just ordered the 993 coils in order to do this and will post a how-to when I figure it all out. You are welcome to beat me to it.

I also ordered the plastic 993 coil covers.

what are the perks?

no brazilian made coil failures

Ricardo, I will be most curious how you mount the coil pack. Look forward to your post!

RicardoD 09-08-2012 07:32 PM

Well, there is one big problem with this I just found out the hard way. The coil connectors on the 993 and the 964 are different.

So even if you make your own bracket you are going to have to change the ends of the connector on your Beru wires. They are supposed to unscrew and then you would have to screw on the 993 coil connectors. At this point I am not sure I am going to want to do that.

Now I don't know what's better, keep using my 72k mile made in spain black coils or change out for new silver Brazilian ones.

greg1990964 09-08-2012 09:17 PM

What part is different? The actuall coil wire connectors to the coil? I know that the 993 coil mounts on the back of the car, near the blower tube on the back part of the car rear of the dist. In tha area other side of rear tailight I was told. That is why they used shorter coil wires than 964. I will keep investigating.
I know a guy with a 993 coil, so I will try and get it to see whats up.

RicardoD 09-08-2012 09:36 PM

The mail and female parts of the connector system that connects the coil to the coil wire is different. Download the 993 PET catalog and you will see the connector ends are different part numbers on the plug wires to the coil.

Pictures attached.

The 993 coil (black) has a positive male connector in the recess while the 964 coil has a female cup shape at the bottom of the connector.

Easiest just to get the 993 lead from a dismantler, should only be a few $$? or have new leads made up at a decent auto electrical shop

Rather than change the fittings on the end of your 964 leads at least

sml 09-09-2012 06:10 AM

i thought some guys assemble their own leads, so this doesn't seem like a major show stopper?

greg1990964 09-09-2012 02:04 PM

993 leads are really short due to it's mounting location. So would have the take the coil end off the wire and put it on the 964 longer wire or mount the coil pack in the rear like on a 993. I definetly think this is worth investigating.

RicardoD 09-09-2012 10:04 PM

Yes, you would have to unscrew the 964 leads and then install the 993 ends.

FeralComprehension 09-10-2012 08:50 AM

I recently installed a set of new leads with the engine in the car; doing it this way pretty much requires taking the connectors off to run the wires.

After an initial hesitancy, I found it to be no big deal at all- would not hesitate to try and get the 993 connector for a swap if I could verify that the 993 connector would in fact unscrew like the 964 ones do.

yep, they do. p/n 928 602 557 00 (or beru 0 300 513 124 / 1 kOhm). Same twist-on connection as the other leads.

The leads & connectors are available individually from Porsche, find the right length & good to go. If an odd length is required, find someone w/ a pair of Beru wire crimpers make a wire for you - Alex, i.e. IXLR8 offers to make wire looms on the side & might be able to help - see -> https://rennlist.com/forums/diy-subm...ion-leads.html. wire lengths are listed in this link as well.

See leads 13 & 14, or connectors # 16 for coils. 993 coil leads will be too short.

A couple of the shorter wires from my car are in usable shape if someone wants them to experiment, the lowers are cooked though.

Bumping an old thread.

I was looking for a writeup on two things.

First does anyone know where a good 964 ignition wire DIY is? I know I have seen one here somewhere.

Second...for anyone that has made the change to 993 coils...any benefit? I have only gone through three sets of coils in four years, but still that seems unacceptable for 30k miles. So if 993 coils are more reliable, maybe I'll make the change.

It's not tricky, just gotta get your hands dirty and expect the beatdown that is replacing 14 wires snaking throughout the top and bottom of the motor.

Rocket Rob 05-15-2014 02:10 PM

I've replace two sets, one on each of my motors. If you have the space/time/tools, dropping the engine to make the change, makes it a lot easier to do. It can be done in the car but snaking the wires over the fan shroud is not fun.

Goughary 05-15-2014 03:32 PM

Rock on vandit, that's exactly what i was looking for. Any thoughts on running the cables behind the fan housing? Does the intake manifold need to come out?

Also, I am using a set of wires that require I reuse my clips, grommets and plug ends...so adding to the time, but saving money.

Vandit 05-15-2014 03:56 PM

I did the job a few months ago as part of a larger project, and yea, having the whole intake off the car made it a cake walk. I don't know if I'd want to tear it all up just for wires tho.

And careful w/ reusing ends. I used the NGK set, so I had to undo wires to slip over grommets and what not, and I'd say about 50% of my old wires didn't unscrew when they came apart, instead the crimp on the end of the ignition wire gave and the threaded end of the ignition wire stayed in the end.

Alex Sol 05-15-2014 08:04 PM

i had the magnecor wires and they did not last. fell apart from heat from the cat conv on the left side and some would fall out of the spark plug holes - i purchased the 6 pc rsr clips to hold the wires in on the spark plug side but did not use em because i replaced with the beru wires which are quite amazing looking. they plug up all the lower spark plug holes with lots of extra rubber and have little or no chance of slipping out.

so i'd recommend them over the wires with the cheap rubber covers that really don't keep all the water out esp when driving in the rain... that was also a hassle for me before. the car would stumble, stutter and stall when driving through puddles...

What do the 993 coil packs run?

Got mine at rock auto for about $125 shipped

here is a 5% discount code for them good to Mid Jan 2016

Pics of install, I used 6mm threaded stock with spacer and nut to hold the ignitor pack in original vertical position, no modification to car required. A hole drilled in 993 coil bracket is all it needed (for threaded stock to go through) \

If (when?) my silver brazillians go south (again ;) ) this is definitely the route I'll go; IMO it makes no sense to do it otherwise given the issues people have had with the silvers.

A bump for this thread.
I finished installing the 993 coils in my 170K mile C4. This was the last step after an recent (5K Kms) engine rebuild and a new fuel pump.
Difference is night and day compared to my unknown vintage coils.
Stabler idle, even before the (KTS 300) adaptation, and *much* crisper, stronger response to throttle inputs.
I don't think the car has ever pulled so hard since I have it.
