Default ignition switch

When I crank my car is the ignition switch supposed to spring back into the number 2 on position? with all other cars this is built into the switch but I know this is unlike all other cars. looked into the forum already and there is a ton of posts with ignition switch somewhere and everywhere in the posts. I just want to know if it should kick back to pos. 2 or does everyone just "manually" place back into pos. 2. Thanks in advance for any replies.

It should move back automatically - you shouldn't have to do it manually.

You need a new electrical section . The spring is not in the lock , it is in the switch behind the lock .

Just did this a while back..make sure you lay a towel under the lock to catch the screws if they fall. I used a magnetic screw driver but one still fell off, the towel caught it before it fell into the nether regions

It should be moved up to number one on the list , imho .
It is not a big or expensive or dirty job .

When my switch did the same thing yours is doing it was a safety problem .
The switch was endangering ...
I would not press you to do the repair without good cause .

Im looking into it now Indy..thanks again for the advice. Right now Red October is parked at least until bump stops come in for the rear struts and spring plates get here too. will see how the week goes and possibly order one early next week.

I ordered an electrical section from a local parts place here. Took a look at it and just dont quite understand how the spring is located there to make the key itself return to pos. 2. If you say it worked I truly do not doubt what youre saying and maybe it was the wrong electrical section, there were no moving parts on this for sure, that I could see anyhow. so I guess im trying to get some explanation as to how the electrical section corrects my problem.

also, how far of a movement is it from start to on position. There again it moves back a little bit and maybe right where its supposed to be. Thanks again for the help.

On my 89 C4 , the switch had the spring in it , when I put a screwdriver into the slot and turned the switch I found the spring was inside the switch .

"Ignition Switch (the electronic part)
Brand new Genuine Porsche part, in stock, ships fast.
Don't fall for the cheaper aftermarket versions - they are junk.

If you can't feel the I, II, and Start positions as very distinct resting points while you are turning the key, then this switch is probably broken since it has the detentes and contacts inside."
